OK so... If I start the pc the cable disconnected, wireless works. I can add and remove the cable anytime whilst its running and I'll still have wireless internet connectivity.
But If I start the pc with the cable connected, wireless doesn't work and won't start working if the cable is removed.
I have an acceptable workaround (pull out the cable and restart), but that's bonkers behaviour that's only just started with my Hardy Heron install.
I don't think so. I haven't looked into it in any detail. A cursory waive of the stylus over the screen didn't do anything. Rubbing my finger over the print scanner didn't do anything either. So my guess is no its not built in

Have you tried dmesg? Or had a noodle around in/var/log? One of the posts in below link gives some example entries in etc/network/interfaces also some commands for checking the configs and starting and stopping the interfaces. Try googling for similar issues, there are heaps of forums, some one is bound to have been through something similar.
I'm going to do open solaris or ubuntu on my other laptop. The hard drive shat it's self last week so I'm gearing up to do a re-install. It doesn't have a touch screen or blue tooth so I figure it will have driver support for everything else . I miss having a unix workstation with terminal windows...
In retrospect I probably should have waited to do the upgrade until after I'd written my assignment.

I remember doing something similar a couple of years ago, deciding - for some unfathomable reason - to upgrade the OS on the afternoon when I had a speech to give the following day.
Well, at 3am in the morning when I finally finished..
