I would certainly join in recommending "Forever War". The trouble here is that I don't know what your looking for...or what you've read.
However I recently went on a John Wyndham bender and can thoroughly recommend "The Midwich Cuokoos" it's a brilliant book and poses lots of interesting questions. Second on that list would be "The Kraken Wakes" it's not about a Kraken but it's very good none the less. If you got through the "War of the Worlds" with it's jarring changes in voice and perspective you'll love Wyndham.
Give me a genre and I'll make more recommendations.

Kraken wakes will probably appeal to recumbenteer because Bunbury gets destroyed by the Krakens.

If I had to read some fiction for pleasurable reading (as opposed to the OMG WTF I CAN SEE THE FUTURE stuff I appear to be addicted to) I'd reccomend the following:

Uglies, Pretties, Specials, Extras: Scott Westerfeld - It's targetted at Young Adult but don't let that stop you. This guy wins the crown for "OK maybe Cyberpunk isn't Dead" Lit. It'll grab you, and it won't let go for 3 books. And then, just because he can, there's a fourth book, arguably as good if not better. (Opinions are divided in this house over whether Book 3 or Book 4 is the best. Both admit it's a really hard call)
The Atrocity Archives: Charles Stross - HP Lovecraft meets Len Deighton and it's got all the stuff I love. Pseudomathematical Magic, L33t H@xxors and Ancient Evil.

Sam Savage's 'Firmin'. It features an existentialist rat living in Boston during the 60s.

The novels so far have all had a 'boys own' feel to them.
If I were to go for more in that vein am I better off going CS Forester or Edgar Rice Burroughs?
