So.  During a visit to Global Foods with Lenka, Esteban, his mom, and my mom, I found jars of this red pepper and eggplant spread that seemed a lot like something I had with Adri in Germany, and we got some to find out if it was delicious or not.  It IS delicious.  so so delicious ( Read more... )

Maybe it's because people don't want to gamble with their health. It's always been more a question of economics, in my opinion. You could get ripped off a lot for drugs that are usually pretty effective at helping you, or you could get ripped off a little for natural things that you have no 'guarantee' will help you. These things aren't as cheap as you make them out to be--the herbal supplement market, for one, is booming, because it is (like pharmaceuticals) a market consisting of businesses out to make a profit. Same with organic food et al. There is absolutely no reason for the herbal supplement/organic food market to promote backyard development, because that means that their market dries up, as well. In this prosperous, free-market society where people have the financial capability to buy instead of grow, there's as of yet no incentive for garden development.

You typically need a depression. Or total war, which more or less has the same effect as a depression (restriction of goods). See Liberty Gardens (WWI) or Victory Gardens (

Hey, I need some advice. I have so few vegan friends so you might be the best person for me to ask. My nutritionist just kicked me off eggs, dairy, and, here's the killer, all wheat, soy, whey, and almonds simultaneously. It's not the end of the world since I can still eat all the steak tacos on corn tortillas or hell, all the steak I want, but it is forcing me to buy a lot of wuss food I'm not accustomed to ( ... )

uuf. Damn that's tricky. non-dairy cheeses suck a lot even when they are made from soy, in my experience. I remember one that was delicious, but not the name of it or even where it came from. It was probably soy too. Also, lots of soycheeses have that sneaky milk protein (casein) in them anyway, which maybe you can eat? Beyond soycheese, I really don't know ( ... )

fuuuck, I need to find out what cheese they use at soul veg because I swear to god that is the best macaroni and cheese I've had in my life, vegan or otherwise. It's probably full of soy and casein which sadly I can't have...
As for egg and soy content in meats, I'll have to take my chances. The way I see it, if I could order a large deep dish pizza and finish the entire thing in one sitting, as I'd often do, without any noticeable negative side effects, these things clearly aren't fucking up up that badly you know? If I can get them 90% out of my diet I'm sure it'll help me significantly.
Can't wait to hear what your gluten-free-friend says.
I'll deffinitly start looking into baking my own bread. I still sneak the occasional onion bun which is delicious and wheat/gluten free but still has some eggs in it obvie. Maybe I can make my own with fake eggs? Are there even fake eggs? I'm so in over my head here.
Anyway, thanks for the help.

there are fake eggs, but for the most part they are gross and i'd rather just cook without eggs. My vegan ex used some stuff called "egg replacer" when he baked. It's a powder that you add water to. I don't know if it fits your other requirements. It's nasty. But, might help create egg-like texture for baking purposes. it's this stuff: http://www.ener-g.com/store/detail.aspx?section=8&cat=8&id=97

The fake meats you may or may not want to eat (you still eat real meat!) are Quorn and one called Match Meat that's from St. Louis. Yup. Local fake meat. the Quorn has a little bit of eggwhite powder or something in it, but is mostly neat science-food fungus. The Match meat you probably are not interested in because it is soyalishus.
