it had to be done

the odds were all against it.
the $96 price tag, the cheesy xeroxed invitation and questionnaire, the blunder about our deceased classmate, the unimaginative hotel ballroom venue. as if reunions weren't already painful enough.

but two of my bestest bought tickets and flew cross country, so i shelled out the bucks and scanned the yearbook so i'd have some hope of recognizing people. of course, not all of "us" wanted to pay to see people they never cared about, so i hosted a brunch the next day too. best idea ever!!! it was like we 3 had been sent in to the reunion for espionage and had a full gossip debriefing the next morning with the old gang.

i didn't realize until now how much they influenced my attitudes and aspirations. we were a bohemian bunch, mixing overachievers with hippies, atheists with mormons and scarved muslims, and band geeks with skater girls. common themes were self-respect, feminism, intelligence, and creative use of the english language. we've each grown in to a more expressive version of ourselves (as if we had any lack of expression in high school), and although we're so different we get along swimmingly.

the afterparty was the most surprising part of the reunion. first, the super retro lounge in Campbell turned out to be a frat party of a bar so we were totally overdressed. second, the ebullient guy on the dance floor turned out to be the bad-boy-who-was-a-nice-guy from high school, and moments after finding this out he had picked me up and gotten my legs (one skirted, one bare) wrapped around his waist. definitely one of those images that would make an excellent blackmail photo had either of my friends had a camera on them. third, the latino salsero hitting on me turned out to be an indian entrepreneur who knew a thing or two about my company.

i've seen the girls separately in various places throughout the past 10 years, but some magic happens when we all get together at once. there was too much to fit in one weekend...we can't possibly wait another 10 years to do this again.
