As to the negotiating thing, I'm pretty sure I was started at a higher salary than the women in my office--almost all my coworkers are women. My manager, a woman, told me as much when we had my salary review a year after I started. She said I wasn't bringing in even revenue based on my salary, which was much higher than a person in my position usually gets. I just sort of looked at her with no idea how to respond. She was the one who'd agreed to pay me what I'd asked for.
