I don't think you could be "self-absorbed and anal retentive" to the degree you think you were then--otherwise, you wouldn't say your years since then were better!

Hey, I've been too elated by work ending to respond to this before now, but I just wanted to offer a note of sympathy. I'm not sure if the following is necessarily a good thing, but... it's always seemed to me that you're one of the people who gets the whole nostalgia/malaise thing a lot more than most of my friends. You don't mention it often at all, but I find that whenever you do, it feels like I'm reading my own words. So I hear you, especially in wondering how much you missed and how much you keep on missing despite your best efforts. I hope it's passed by now and that hopefully you were successful in starting some creative endeavor.
