Several times during the months she had spent with Cameron, they had planned to attend some event together. John's party and the masque, most memorably. Yet neither was, to her knowledge, the special arrangement of invitation, anticipation, and manufactured awkwardness that humans of the twentieth century called 'a date.'

She was not, she supposed, nervous enough for it qualify as a date, since she was not, in fact, nervous at all.

"As well for you you've already gained my bed or I'd suspect you of trying to find your way there by flattery." Her tone matched her lifted eyebrow and quirk of a smile that said she teased. In fact, the compliment pleased her. "Since you have, I suppose I may simply accept and thank you, while telling you you look 'brilliant' as ever."

"Thank you, love," Bill replied, then brought his hands around to the front to show her what they held. "Just a small offering for you. The shoppe downtown was out of heart-shaped balloons and singing Valentines."
