Badly-disguised bookstores...

When I started playing pennywhistle and recorder, and then later, when I started playing mountain dulcimer, I quickly realized that music stores were just badly-disguised bookstores. During the five or so years that a group of eight to twelve folks met once a month to sight-read Rensaissance consort music (mostly on recorders, but sometimes a ( Read more... )

I am very fortunate that there are no local stores with enticing displays of silver and gold (not made into anything). And the only gem shops are far enough away that it's a committment to get to them.

On the other hand, the gem show that rolls around 3x a year is very close, and there's a guy who takes classes where I teach who also sells stones... In fact, I purposely ask him to come to class, knowing he'll have dreadful temptations for me! As well as stones for my students, which is the supposed point. :)

At least I don't go to fabric stores often anymore!

hey, um, i have no idea who you are, but i'm currently in the market for a couple (very nice, expensive) stones (like a couple saphires or something) and was wondering if you had any ideas on where to go in the boston area to look? i don't necessarily trust the jeweler we're getting our work from to have the best selection/price in stones.
and which gem show are you referring to?
i do some (small amount) of silverwork myself and really it would be dangerous to know about more opporunities to buy stuff but i can't help asking...
thanks :)

For really good quality stones, I have to recommend Stachura in Uxbridge ((508) 278-6525). I'm not a stone expert myself, but everyone I know gets stuff from them and say, and it seems to me, that it's good quality and reasonably priced, in a wide range of prices including quite expensive. They buy their own stones and describe them honestly and accurately, and are great to deal with- they'll spend ages helping one, even if one's not looking at very pricey stones ( ... )

bother. well, the wholesale thing isn't happening, so oh well on the first one.

ah - i know about the marlborough show and was wondering if there were any others i didn't know about -- i kind of don't want to wait until may though.

the cost of the custom work and the materials other than the stone (platinum -- owch) totally swamps the cost of the sort of stones we're looking at. the jeweler said there wouldn't be any change in the cost to use a stone we brought in vs. buying one from them. so i'm inclined to check out some other places...

thanks for the info though :)

Heh. Yes indeed. I have those organizational books myself. Once upon a time, Jordin and I had 45 minutes to kill before an appointment. Oh, look, I said, there is an office supply store. One hour and over a hundred dollars later...

Have you considered taking up brick-laying next? You'd at least get a place to put your stuff out of it.

No, no, BOOKCASE building, silly purple kitty. Sigh. If my dad were still around, I'd never have to buy another bookcase. On the other hand, my Evil Twin made me a beautiful bookcase (*poof* you're a bookcase), trashpicks them for me when he sees them, and I do still have 2 of dad's.

The brick-laying is to build a place to put the bookcases. That's what we've run out of up here.

That was just a fun entry to read. I once did calligraphy at a SCA event just for fun( illuminated letter) and have a few books on calligraphy prob not as many as you have.:^)
My thing is illustration so I have to say the art store is a temptation indeed.. Art books... paint....pencils....

It is good to hear from you. When we occasionally run into each other, we sigh for more conversation -- email me, we'll try to find a time?
