[I]solation sings a siren song, and it's louder than it used to be. Maybe some of my high-school self -- the bookworm introvert -- reimposed herself over the village gossip self.

Sing it, sister. Except that my high-school self was already emerging from the bookworm chrysalis, so for me it's almost a return to elementary school.
