Home Coming

Basil was shocked by the emptiness that greeted him as he emerged in Battle Creek. There was no sound of gunfire, or even the cheers of both teams as they prepared themselves for battle. There were no bullets whizzing through the air, no soldiers running around as they engaged in yet another life or death battle, no movement at all... nothing. Just ( Read more... )

Damn Spike Douglas. Damn him and his faulty AI right to Hell. Though Spike had reacted reasonably like how Wyoming feared he might have, it didn't make it any easier when he had neglected his duties and allowed Basil Leaves to go AWOL. If one freelancer couldn't be trusted to keep the crazies in the 'Gulch, then another had to be entrusted with the duty to put them back in.

Dashing across the battlefield that had been allowed to fallow, fast enough through tall grass to be mistaken for wind or wildlife, Wyoming checked for any of what could be Leaves's comrades or enemies. His armour shimmered like a heatwave as his cloaking device made him nearly invisible. One would think him only a trick of the light.

Has Battle Creek and Leaves been completely forsaken? Wyoming, this doesn't sound good. Stay on your toes. Could be the Flood or Covenant or whatever. Phinehas warned as Wyoming rushed toward what sounded like the pitiful laments of an abandoned human.

After what felt like hours of crying, Basil sat up and rubbed his eyes. Okay, so he'd been abandoned by his crew, and betrayed by Sarge. He could handle it. He was a big boy; he could take care of himself. He could.

Why, it's Basil. Wyoming slowed down to a jog as he came up behind him. Whatever bitter and angry tongue-lashing he had saved for the rookie melted from his mind when he saw his lowly state. Though the idea of pity was far from his mind, he still felt it was best to deal lightly with the rookie. After all, even if he could tear him a thousand new holes, Basil Leaves was immortal and he was not.

Like that's the issue here. Phinehas remarked as Wyoming placed his hand on Leaves's shoulder, uncloaking to identify himself.

Basil jumped at the unexpected contact on his shoulder and whipped his head around.

"You!" he shrieked, and scrambled away from the white freelancer. "What are you doing here?"

He hadn't forgotten the last time they met up, in the caves.

"Well, whatever you decide, just know the other rooms should be empty. You're welcome to stay in any one you want. But I'm locking my door, so no funny business, all right?"

"I apologise for the incident back in the caves, it wasn't very becoming of me, I assure you. I was under a lot of stress. You needn't fear me. Besides, I'll just be staying in the old blue base. Call me when you get bored and want to go back. I'll be here as long as you do."

He turned to leave, "And I'll try to stay out of your way."
