Canon Character and Series: Princess Ariel from Disney's The Little Mermaid
In-Game Name: Ariel Weather
Age: 16
Gender: female
Position & Ship (first and second choice for position please): Records Keeper (second choice: seaman), The Winding Way
Appearance:
The first thing people notice about Ariel is her bright, flaming red hair. Full and luscious, and a hair colour rarely seen among mermaids. Her eyes are a bright blue and very big and curious. Her skin is still rather pale, due to not receiving much sunlight under water, but she is starting to tan a little. Because of how light refracts underwater, Ariel's eyesight above land isn't all that great, (not so bad that she can't walk without bumping into things, but bad enough that print is blurry) so while reading or writing she wears a set of reading glasses. As a mermaid, Ariel had a long, seaweed green tail and wore purple clamshells over her breasts. As a human, Ariel typically wears anything given to her, but she prefers the colour blue since it reminds her of the lake and brings out her eyes. Ariel also always wears a silver locket around her neck.
Personality:
If curiosity really killed the cat it must have no affect on mermaids because Ariel should have gotten herself killed by now. Her sense of adventure, bravery and recklessness also should have killed her. Maybe it's luck that's saved her from getting caught in a fishing net or some other such fate. Either way, Ariel wants to know about everything and anything that piques her interest…even if that means going into dangerous situations to do so. But this curiosity is also most likely due to one of her best traits: her insatiable thirst and eagerness to learn and learn fast. It only took her a handful of months out of water to learn how to read and write. All of this holds especially true if it pertains to the surface world, of which she has always been fascinated with.
Aside from that, Ariel's other biggest trait is probably her cheerfulness and how excitable she can get. She's fun loving and playful, known for teasing her close friends. She's also however quite naïve and innocent, perhaps due to sheltered life under the water.
Ariel is also a natural born collector, who will bring anything interesting home and keep a well-organized collection. Although she is prone to being forgetful, she is very organized. Even while under the water, all her human things were organized by item, then size and colour, etc, etc. And while she may forget that she was supposed to go there or she was supposed to do this, she will never lose anything due to forgetfulness. (And if she does lose something she becomes emo :<)
She loves freedom and independence…even if at times she doesn't seem ready for either. She's still just a teenager after all. Also, like any teenager Ariel she can be rebellious and prone to sulking if something doesn't go her way or if "people don't understand her". It usually wears off in a couple of hours.
Ariel's favorite thing is to do is sing. But she also loves to read, write and draw. Any human activity she HAS to try with vigor at least once, no matter WHAT it is.
Abilities/Weapons:
There are some abilities Ariel has just from having been born a mermaid. One of these is the ability to understand and communicate with all living creatures through speech. (under water, her best friend was a fish) The other ability is that she can hold her breath longer than humans can (which was how she was able to sing while her and her gills were out of water for a good 15 minutes). Otherwise though, her abilities would include her beautiful singing voice, her ability to learn quickly, and her organization skills. (if they count at all)
Weaknesses:
Despite having been human for a while now Ariel still has difficulties with walking. Running is pathetic and she usually stumbles. She doesn't have a lot of strength either and while this won't come up in the RP I think, she can't swim despite having been a mermaid. (she keeps on trying to use her legs like she did her tail and it doesn't work out good) While her recklessness hasn't killed her yet, it's only a matter of time, and her naivety makes her prey to some sinister folk. If her mana crystal is stolen she becomes a mermaid again (not immediately though. It takes an hour for the effects to wear off) and is quite literally a fish out of water…she can't do anything but swim in this state.
History:
Ariel is a mermaid born in Ibari Lake. Back when the first mayor of Licere was running his monster removal campaign many mermaids living in the lake perished, branded as monsters. Not every mermaid was killed and their numbers have been steadily increasing since then, but because of that mermaids have become weary towards humans and stay away from them. As far as the surface world knows the sightings of mermaids in Ibari Lake are nothing more but rumors.
Despite the persecution the mermaids of Ibari Lake have faced at the hands of humans, Ariel still found herself oddly fascinated by the surface world. The lake was restrictive and she longed to be able to explore the world above rather than her small one below.
One day a young man named Eric fell into the lake. He would have drowned if Ariel hadn't saved him. Ariel brought him to shore and was amazed by his looks, but she quickly went back into the lake when she heard people coming, afraid of being seen. Eric however had already begun to regain consciousness due to her singing. When he realized she was gone, he vowed to return the next day to try and find her.
That next day, Ariel was above the surface again when Eric came back. Before she could retreat into the water, he called out to her and asked her to stay. He thanked her for saving him and asked for her name. The two talked for hours and at the end of the conversation Eric said he would return again tomorrow.
They continued meeting like this for a month. The two fell in love and wanted to be together but weren't sure how. When one of her friends let slip to her father however that she was in love with a human, her father was infuriated and forbade her from seeing Eric again. When she ignored his order, he destroyed her entire collection of human things.
While upset, Ariel didn't care and just wanted to be with Eric. Unfortunately the day after her precious collection was destroyed, Eric told her he was leaving. He had only been in Licere on vacation and while he wanted to stay, he couldn't. With her love and collection gone, Ariel grew lonely and depressed and wanted more than anything to be rid of her mermaid's tail.
One day while swimming along the lake bottom, something caught her eye in the mud. What she dug out appeared to be a jewel, but in reality it was a mana crystal. Somehow the crystal managed to turn her human but not knowing how to use legs to swim, Ariel almost drowned. Luckily she washed up on shore with the help of some fish friends still alive, mana crystal still in her clenched hand. She was found by a Licerean woman who quickly took care of her and brought her home with her.
When Ariel woke up, she explained to the woman what happened. Despite being unsure if she was telling the truth or just had amnesia the woman took Ariel in, giving her clothes and a locket to keep her mana crystal in. From then on Ariel lived in Licere and saw many things, although she eventually went back to the lake to talk to her fish friends and to say good bye to her family. Ariel's caretaker started to view her as the daughter she never had (Ariel even got the idea for her last name from hers) and taught her to read and write. Ariel learnt quickly, quicker than she was expected to. In some sort of twist of fate, she also developed a fascination with the sky, like the one she had for the land while underwater.
Eventually Ariel decided to go travelling to learn more and maybe meet Eric again…
