On the Kerfuffle Over the Hugos

I'm not a member of Worldcon this year, which is kind of a shame because I'd like to vote against the slate nominations (both Sad Puppies and Rabid Puppies), even in the instances where I might otherwise have considered a nominee (e.g., Toni Weisskopf for Editor, Long Form; Guardians of the Galaxy, Dramatic Presentation, Long Form; or Skin Game by ( Read more... )

I didn't know Jim Butcher was affiliated with this stuff. And the Alera books looked so interesting too, alas.

It's unclear from the discussion at ML whether he's affiliated, or whether he was even aware that he was to appear on the slate. His books are fun (both Dresden and the Codex books), though I wouldn't normally have considered the Dresden book for a nomination. Don't let this nomination via the Puppies preclude you from reading them.

My feeling is that there will be rules changes, but since they can't be implemented sooner than three Worldcons (IIRC; might be two) from now, there's going to be bad feelings about this for the next few years.

At least nobody has (yet) suggested marking these next several years' worth of winners with asterisks, a la Roger Maris.

I'm planning to get a supporting membership as per usual, and just voting no award.

I'm considering it (though money is an object, even at that level, at this time). The only place where I would consider voting for a slate-recommended work is in Best Dramatic Presentation, because it's hard to believe that the studios would either have known, or cared, about being on the slates in advance. Otherwise, if I do wind up voting, Noah Ward will eclipse all slate nominees, while non-slate noms will be considered as usual.
