Having recently rewatched two classic SF TV series each of which was cancelled after one season, I think that if I could go back in time and set things up so one was not cancelled, I would pick Alien Nation over Firefly. You're probably right on the system in Firefly; the problem there, of course, is that even a giant stellar system has limits to its potential complexity. IIRC, people have in fact done face checks on the series, and report a serious shortage of Asian faces relative to the apparent dominant culture.
I do disagree with regard to how much there is left to develop in the FF!verse. There were certainly plot hooks left open at the end of its season (River and the Preacher representing two of the major ones). I just think there was MORE left in AN to work through. And I like the Tenctonese as a race. They're quirky enough to feel alien to us (which is a compliment), and "human" enough to reflect on us, which is what aliens are generally used for in SF.
