They set it up so that you know where they are on multiple playthroughs. And most of the time, people play at least twice. (And you have a rogue in the Korcari Wilds. It's Daveth.)
It has a learning curve.
If your crapsack place was the only home you knew, wouldn't you want to protect it?
I might love this game too much to post an opinion that isn't biased.
Yeah, I know Daveth was a rogue. But when I made him active and tried to open the chests, I got "Insufficient Skill", and when I checked his character info he didn't have the "Deft Hands" talent trained, which I gather is the "Pick Locks" equivalent. So he was kind of useless as a rogue.

I missed a ton of chests in the noble orign story the first time because I wasn't a rogue. For next time. :)
