In the military of the United States, and I'm assuming other nations as well, besides the written rules about who salutes whom, there is an unwritten rule about "saluting the uniform."

There is no civility left in politics. I've seen more than one finger nearly broken for stuff like that. Now that would have been funny. STupid to do, but funny all the same.
