Character name: Madoka Kaname
Fandom: Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Timeline: End of the series - a.k.a. SPOILERS ALL UP IN THIS APPLICATION
Age: 14
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Madoka has the ability to clear the taint from Soul Gems on the brink of becoming Grief Seeds, and can shoot arrows made of energy from her magical bow. Like other magical girls, she has enhanced agility, can leap tall buildings in a single bound, her ability to feel pain is greatly lessened, and she can’t be killed unless her (meteor-sized) Soul Gem is destroyed. She’s also omniscient, and can travel in both space and time instantaneously, but those abilities will more-or-less disappear once she regains her human form.
How would they use their abilities?: To protect the hopes and dreams of girls everywhere! And fight monsters and demons and things like that.
Appearance: Madoka is a normal 14-year old girl. She’s a little less than 4’11, and looks just a bit young for her age. Her hair is pink, the same color as her eyes, and usually tied into thick twintails. She used to tie it back with red ribbons, but she gave her only pair to Homura. When left down, it reaches her shoulders. She normally wears her school uniform, but also has a Magical Girl outfit that is pink, white, and very, very poofy. When she unleashes her limit breaker/’Goddess’ form, her eyes turn gold, her hair and dress become much longer, and her clothes and ribbons become completely white. She also gets a pair of translucent angel-like wings that seem to serve no purpose other than looking pretty cool.

Background/Personality:
Madoka was a typical young girl. She had a loving family, great friends, and worked hard to help others. She liked art and drawing and small animals. She was always honest and earnest, and never did anything bad. Perhaps she was a bit too empathetic and eager to please, but she seemed optimistic and didn't have any real worries. But despite never really having any serious hardships, her sense of self-worth was almost nonexistent. She couldn't help but feel like she was worthless and a burden to the people she cares about. So one day, when a white weasel-like creature calling itself Kyubey approached her and asked if she wanted to become a Puella Magi (a.k.a. magical girl) in exchange for a wish, she jumped at the chance. She wasn't able to think of a wish for herself though- instead, she asked to save the life of a black cat who had been hit by a car. Afterwards, she met up with a veteran Puella Magi named Mami Tomoe, and the two of them worked together to fight against 'witches'- mysterious monsters that attacked humanity from the shadows.

Madoka was thrilled by this development- she finally felt like she was being useful. She became bolder and more confident as a result, and when a timid girl named Homura Akemi transferred to her class, she took it upon herself to help her out. She even saved Homura's life from a witch, and this became something she prided herself on. Sometimes she went overboard with her new magic powers and made mistakes, but she never gave up and felt fulfilled just be being a Puella Magi. When a Walpurgis Night- a super powerful witch- came to her city, she was even ready to give up her life to defeat it. And she did, dying nobly, like the hero she so wanted to be.

Unknown to her, though, Homura wanted to protect her as well and became a Puella Magi herself. She then turned time back to the week before Madoka became a Puella Magi, in hopes of saving her. But fate could not be changed that easily. Madoka's feelings of worthlessness would drive her to becoming a Puella Magi time and time again. Come the arrival of Walpurgis Night, she would always either die or become a witch herself. In one timeline she discovered that Puella Magi became witches when their soul gems were tainted, and that is the only one in which she regret her decision. She even went so far as to beg Homura to keep her from becoming a Puella Magi in the next timeline, and even asked Homura to kill her before she could become a witch and destroy the world she loved and fought to protect.

But as Homura kept turning back the clock, Madoka's potential strength as a Puella Magi grew, as she came to bear the fates of countless worlds that were thrown away as Homura went back in time. She felt more pressure to become a Puella Magi, despite the dangers and despite Homura's warnings. She saw Mami die in battle, and she watched her best friend, Sayaka, slip into despair from her wish backfiring and the stress of being a Puella Magi piling up. In this timeline, she was more conflicted then she had ever been before. The cheerful if somewhat shy girl she had been before entering the world of the Puella Magi was slowly being worn away, and the bright and confident girl she had been in past timelines seemed to be gone forever. Instead, her indecision grew and every new revelation about the true nature of Puella Magi sent her into a spiral of doubt and insecurity. She still tried to be brave and help however she could, but it wasn't enough, and ultimately she could only sit back and watch as her friends fought and died around her.

Finally, shortly before Walpurgis Night was to arrive, Sayaka died. Madoka, angry and grieving for her friend, yelled at Kyubey for not understanding the pain girls went through for their wishes. He then revealed that his race had been granting the wishes of girls and making Puella Magi ever since the dawn of mankind. They made wishes and blessed mankind, then fell into despair and became witches that cursed humanity, and the emotional energy they released helped stave off the heat death of the universe. But through Kyubey's kind thought this to be a good deal, Madoka couldn't bear it. It wasn't wrong to hope and want to make things better. Why did girls who wanted to protect the world have to suffer? Why did all their efforts have to come to nothing?

Finally, Walpurgis Night came, and Madoka finally found the wish she would give up her soul for, and that optimistic and confident girl was at last revived. If the world was unfair and made it wrong to believe in yourself, then she would change the way the world worked. She wished to destroy every witch, in the past and future, with her own hands. That wish unleashed her massive power, and essentially became a goddess, creating a new universe in which Puella Magi didn't become witches. At the end of time, she destroyed her own Soul Gem to stop herself from being a witch as well, and all traces of her physical existence were removed. But though she could not really interact with the world anymore, she continued to watch over it. She came to embody the concept of hope, saving Puella Magi from their despair and suffering, and protecting the world from the curses they would have unleashed, all with a gentle smile on her face.

Personality: Madoka starts off the series as a cheerful, kind-hearted young girl. She loves her family and gets along easily with her classmates at school. She loves animals, especially small ones like birds and cats, and would readily help any kind of injured or helpless creature she might find. After all, the wish she vowed to risk her soul for in at least one timeline is just to save a cat that was hit by a car. She's got a lot of natural empathy for those around her- if someone's hurt or scared, she's equally hurt and scared for them. This is especially evident in her friendship with Sayaka; Madoka feels her friend's pain much more clearly than Sayaka wants to admit to. In the face of adversity, like when following other Puella Magi into battes with witches, she might be scared, but she'll go anywhere to support her friends. Her dreams are all of being strong and heroic, so that she can help as many people as she can, even if it means risking her life.

Despite this though, she does have serious self-worth issues, and they quickly come to the front over the course of the series. She thinks of herself as slow and without any kind of special talent- someone who will only be a burden to others. And as her friends start fighting and falling to the various traps of being a Puella Magi, Madoka starts feeling more and more worthless by comparison. She's only human, after all, and as much as she wants to help them, she's still scared of dying or being hurt- and she hates herself for it. The result is she becomes incredibly timid and indecisive, doubting every decision she tries to make. It's only after she makes her wish to become a Puella Magi that she gains any confidence- and even then, she's quick to throw away her life for the sake of others.

By the end of the series, though, Madoka finally understands her own worth as an individual. She decides to become a Puella Magi not because she wants to feel fulfilled, but because she has something that she really wants to fight for. And more importantly, she realizes that other people truly care about her and believe she has value. Her life has meaning now, and she becomes more confident with this new understanding, even before making her wish. This makes all the difference, and she's able to fulfill her potential and ultimately changes the universe.

Um... hello!

[A young girl smiles at the screen. She seems a bit nervous, though, and tugs a bit at her pink hair.]

Not to be a bother, but does anyone know where I could get some hair ribbons? I'm used to tying it up, but I sort of lent my last ones to a friend before I got here so...

[Her smile turns wistful as she trails off and loses herself in thought. After a moment, she catches herself.]

A-Aha, sorry, sorry! I guess I'm still getting used to everything. I just meant to say I'd be very grateful if someone could help me out with this. Um, thank you for listening!

3rd person sample:
It was strange. That was the only feeling Madoka could really hold on to as she filled out the forms that kept being placed in front of her. After existing in a place where time had no meaning, to suddenly be brought back to the physical world- to be able to touch things and talk to people other than Puella Magi on the verge of death- was all so, so strange.

There were other feelings as well. There was the grief that her world had ended. There was the happiness at being seen and remembered by others. There was loneliness at being cut off from the Puella Magi she had saved. But they were all such a confused jumble that she could barely make sense of them right now. Fortunately, the mindless signing of her name over and over was giving her plenty of time to get her thoughts in order.

I was supposed to keep fighting forever... She thought to herself, hanging her head a little. But... had she really stopped? Her understanding of time and space had been radically changed since she made her wish. She knew about every universe that had existed and could come to exist, and understood that even if her world had been destroyed in this one, that didn't mean it was gone from her's. Just like how even though her physical self was here now, there was certainly a part of her who was, is, and would fight to protect that world for all eternity, fulfilling the contract she had made with Kyubey.

"That's right... " She said softly, filling in the last line of her forms. "I'm still with everyone. That hasn't changed at all." Hadn't Mami told her she would become hope itself? If that was the case, then there was no reason to think her being here would effect that. But there was still a tiny sliver of doubt that needled at her mind. If that was true, then what was her purpose here? She paused, then got up to turn in her papers. It was up to her to find it for herself.
