And the sign said: Long haired freaky people need not apply

I should have suspected something when my roommate returned ecstatic from an Arlo Guthrie concert and introduced me to the joys of "Alice's Restaurant." That and the upcoming primary should have tipped off that the political winds were a' blowin.

In case you don't go to WM or did, and have been under a rock, WM is doing its best to become a hotbed ( Read more... )

as a foreigner to WM, I guess I don't understand. What exactly did he take down? What was the nature of the sex work art?

Also, why would any student... and I mean ANY student, care about the President? The only reason I know who my school president IS is because of the shootings that happened here and the national coverage. If some kind of committee removed him, I don't think any real VT student would care. They certainly wouldn't protest, as the only thing we protest here are those meaningless "Take back the night" marches that cause litter and don't really raise funds for anything.

I can't summarize it all here, but this Wash Post article should help. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/12/AR2008021201078.html

Around here, the president lives on campus and is expected to be a sort of mascot/beloved uncle figure. He shakes hands, hosts lunches with students, and appears at campus events like the Yule Log ceremony, where he dresses as Santa and reads 'The Grinch." Girls actually cried when they got the news about Nichol, so I guess he was doing ok in that department.
As to the pumping money from alumni and other donors, not so much. After the Wren Cross one guy retracted 12 million dollars he had pledged.

Also, don't even pretend to hide behind "I'll leave it to your imagination." They specifically said on the TeeVee that Obama won the White Catholic vote, and that means you :P. Also it's a well known fact that no Republican would support Hillary, as they have a kind of irrational hatred towards her that can only be explained as... "Man... I just don't like her." or "SHE'S EVIL" or "Man, she's so fake." without elaboration.

you imagined wrong! I was strategizing in terms of "electability" and how each candidate stood against McCain.
Both "scare" me for different reasons. Hillary because she say whatever crazy thing comes into her head, and Obama because his beautiful rhetoric hides a lack of experience with foreign policy. Also, I think I like that both of them want to expand coverage for health care.

huh. I actually voted strategically for Huckabee. Actually I think I might like him more than McCain anyway, but back when I voted I thought it would be between him and Romney, as it turns out it's between him and McCain. It's actually not a bad vote because it puts pressure on McCain to go to the right, making him easier to beat.

And actually Huckabee isn't that bad for a conservative southern preacher guy. His Fair tax doesn't make any sense, but also has 0% chance of passing. On all other issues he wouldn't be successful in.

Hi, I heart you wmk06 February 13 2008, 11:23:51 UTC
a) I am a hippie and I know this, but I also used to feel strong urges to throw things at the kids on the Tucker steps.

b) The ability to see both sides and be (actually) "fair and balanced" is so rare in this world. I hope you never lose it!

c) Clearly I approve of your vote, strategic or otherwise :P I am also pleased you didn't vote for that COMPLETE NUTCASE HUCKABEE. How is that man actually getting votes? CRAZY.

Not that you expressed a desire to throw things at the kids on the Tucker steps. I meant it more like "I am a hippie who finds other hippies extremely annoying." Maybe this is because I have the politics but not the bathing habits...

Huckabee got at least 40% here - shudder.

There's a group of gay Tucker hipsters who convene with their cigarettes outside my building in the evenings. I haven't ever thrown anything to interrupt their chain smoking, but that's not a bad idea. Maybe some lung cancer literature.

Altho they are well groomed. I actually contemplated asking one what gel he used on his impeccably curly hair.
