1. I saw Eddie Izzard last night with L2 and he was delightful as always. And super hot in his tux and heels and eyeliner. If I were looking for a romantic partner, an action transvestite is really what I'd want <3.

2. Gallifrey season 3 is getting SO GOOD I CAN'T TAKE IT. Every time I listen to an ep I take a month break in between because I get ( Read more... )

circe fails at fandom, l2, pointless entry is pointless, rl, big finish is the best, wangst, fandom wankkkk

Tumblr is a bit like that. It's one of the things I do miss about LJ.
Especially as I've noticed a LOT of people on tumblr don't want a discussion, they want to state their opinion, and watch out for the rocks if you dare disagree...

But really, interacting with new people? Yeah, good luck with that. It's not easy at all :(

they want to state their opinion, and watch out for the rocks if you dare disagree...I think part of the problem is that the way tumblr is set up extremes are what get noticed/reblogged, so if you're not sending an ask but reblogging to say "I mostly agree with you, but have you considered x,y,z?" that's not as rebloggable as "You are 7000% WRONG, here's why!" or "You are 7000% right, let me add more points on why you are right and the best!" It just invites wank IMO. :P ( ... )

I didn't even add anything, it was brilliant meta from kilodalton and even so I STILL got someone
But...if they disagreed with the post, why wouldn't they go after the person that wrote it, instead of the person that reblogged it? That doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

it was about the trigger warnings, I still get annoyed about that.
I only saw bits and pieces of that, and I people on both sides saying stupid crap on what could have been a reasonable, illuminating discussion. But, for you personally, as far as I know/remember someone asked you for a trigger warning (in kind of a snotty way), and your response was "I'm not sure if I agree with you, but sure I'll add in a warning if you want one". Like, how is that anything other than a 100% reasonable, correct response? I don't understand why anyone could have a problem with your response in the context that it was presented. Fandom, why.

basically, tumblr often feels a bit like high school again.
I wouldn't even go that far. It's middle school level bullshit.

I've figured out aspects of tumblr and there are parts of it I enjoy, but I haven't quite got the whole making connections with new people thing yet. Which sucks because that's probably the biggest draw of fandom to me. With LJ I could easily meet and chat with so many people. With tumblr... eh, I just haven't figured it out very well. Also I feel like my timezone/working hours are way more prohibitive on tumblr than they ever were on LJ because things move so much more quickly.

I like tumblr for graphics and gifs and fanart and pretty things, and it's exceptionally good at that, I just feel it fails at the other half of important fandom-y stuff. I'd just like some discussion without, like, going to Gallifrey Base. :P

I haven't quite got the whole making connections with new people thing yet
Lol, if you figure this out, please share with the class!

I also feel like it's hard to connect with people without having fandom discussions, which is hard, or sharing personal stuff, which I am not cool doing if it can't be flocked, and I'm sort of amazed that people are so open about stuff. I mean, not that I'm a horrible person online but my "fanart" (I use that term loosely) tumblr occasionally has racy stuff, and my other tumblr in addition to fandom has a lot of politics and nsfw stuff, so if anyone from RL found me it would potentially be very embarrassing/creepy.

because things move so much more quickly. This, totally. If you're not on tumblr all the time to be there when stuff is happening trying to ( ... )

tumblr just feels so much more public. like, even stuff I would have happily made public posts about on LJ I don't on tumblr because of the whole tagging/reblogging thing. it's more like a shared noticeboard we all have a corner of. whereas even public LJ is more like your front garden, you know: people can see it, but most people don't really look for it.

and yeah, discussion/meta do not work there. even message boards don't work half as well as LJ's threaded comments but at least they understand the fundamental principle of conversation.

Not to revive a dead thread, but since I'm already here...

it's more like a shared noticeboard we all have a corner of.
I still find the tagging system a little awkward. Like, it makes perfect sense in theory and I like the idea of it, but when it comes to fandom it seems like you still get so many people doing weird stuff like tagging their hate because they don't know better, whereas you would rarely have someone join a community and then make a negative post?

I also am much more shy about posting something in the tags that I would in a themed comm. It doesn't make sense, because they're pretty much the same thing, but for some reason it feels like so much more pressure...

I have not made my peace with Tumblr. I agree that there seems really no way to have a varied and complex conversation and that's what I like. Sure the gifs are cute but I cannot fathom that people write on Tumblr and that people read stories on it (unless forced to do so).

I will never be too old for fandom but I certainly don't always hangout in the populated areas of fandom. Reminds me of when I started to read X-Files fics and then realized I was actually part of a bigger fandom. Back them I was still not savvy enough to mess with message boards (plus I had a infant & was perpetually exhausted) but managed conversation on webpages.

Yeah, in addition to conversation fanfic writing on tumblr throws me because the commenting system is really...not there. So I guess you have to be happy with a large number of likes? And links change and disappear so often, and formatting can be illegible. So it's really not my fave for reading fic.

Yeah, I remember the old days of webpages and then mailing lists and message boards, and remember being excited when it became easier to communicate (commenting on a journal fic entry rather than having to email the author directly? Brilliant!) so I guess I'm disgruntled that now it's moving in the opposite direction. Maybe it will swing back this way eventually? Maybe instead of old I meant cranky...

But you used to be able to have interesting conversations about meta, and hear what other people had to say, and I feel like tumblr's completely lost on that.

God yes, this is the WORST part of tumblr. It's so scattershot and difficult to keep a hold of any sort of discussion.

Discussion is totally one of my favorite parts of fandom, and I'm so sad it seems to have dried up so much!
