Apostrophyless in Mexico

Leaving Tuxtepec today my Aunt and I rode in a fancy taxi to the bus station. On the outside it was your basic small, sedan taxi but on the inside it had an excessive sound system, a tv on the dash playing music videos to accompany each "jam" the driver was pumping out, a super wide rear view mirror etc ( Read more... )

a few times in conversations with non-vegs (especially at work and when i was in high school) people would use cultural identity as a reason to eat meat. "oh i'm mexican we put carne asada in everything", "oh i'm black we eat a lot of chicken". and really? my dad's family, the white side, absolutely can not wrap their heads around me not eatingg meat. it's been like seven years and they still do the "chicken okay?" thing (though his wife has gotten good at it, ggotta give props).

my mom's family, the mexican side, has always just understood what no meat means. sure they'll tease me but there's never been a real problem with comprehending it (even with my limited spanish). bacon mistake aside it sounds like your family made an effort, and that rules and further proves my point.

They have made an effort... the aunt whose bacon I ate bought me soymilk and hummus, woo!
More than one person on this trip has asked if I eat fish, I actually hadnt heard that one in quite a while.

Ive encountered the "Im mexican" defense... not the "Im black defense" though. So silly; Im mexican AND black! and if we want to get really nerdy/hokey about it, my blood type is O positive and I feel just fine on my animal free diet.

Hi Bill!

Once not too long ago I was at an Indian food restaurant happily chowing down on some veggie pakoras when all of the sudden I bit into one that was all hard and not falling apart as cooked vegetables do. Pulling it away I saw it was chicken. Such a bummer. I wasn't really mad, they didn't intentionally try to feed me chicken, but it's definitely, er, shocking.

It's rad that they made such a huge effort. I'm always so stoked when our families are so accommodating for Bill and me. My step mom is amazing. I think she likes the challenge/change of routine when we're around. My dad's not a complete meat and potatoes kind of guy or anything, but I think the overall vegetable intake increases quite a bit when we're there.
