CHARACTER
NAME: Harleen Quinzel
AGE: Early twenties
GENDER: Female
ROLE IN CANON: She's been antagonist, love interest, love interest to the antagonist, protagonist, and running joke.
FANDOM: DC Comics
FANDOM MEDIUM: Comic books
TIMELINE PERIOD:
ABILITIES: Immunity to all poisons. Extremely athletic, preternatural agility. She's a trained psychoanalysis. Also has a slamming sense of humor.
CHARACTER HISTORY:
Harleen Quinzel's childhood isn't really delved into. As a teenager she was an amazing, possibly world-class gymnast. She got into Gotham State University on a gymnastic scholarship, and planned to graduate with a degree in psychology. She dreamed of a career in the oh-so-respectable world of pop psychology, much like Dr. Phil and the sorts of people that run the late night relationship call-in shows. She wanted to publish books and be a celebrity. However, she wasn't exactly the best student. In fact, academically, she was a flop. Fortunately for her, she was a spunky, busty blonde with a winning smile, and that Gotham's academics were easily corrupted. She essentially slept her way through her four years at Gotham State.
Her spectacular grades didn't stop her from interning at what was considered the most terrifying institution that anywhere near Gotham had to offer. No one ever wanted to intern at Arkham. However, Quinzel had her eye on the stars. She wanted the fame and excitement that came with working with the high profile inmates (not patients) in Arkham. She can't really connect to the danger that she's being presented with at work; she's too busy being enthralled by the Joker.
In the first few seconds she sees him, he winks at her. She swoons. All hope is loss.
The Joker has her number pretty much from that moment on. He leaves her a note and a rose. He's attracted by how close her name is to the word Harlequinn. She puts on a strong front, trying to pretend that she's unimpressed and suspicious of him, but she's completely smitten. She wants to be around him whenever possible, and he flirts and charms her easily. It doesn't hurt that he offers to spill all his secrets to her. She can't help it; she sees hearts and dollar signs.
Even as an intern, Quinzel was able to beg and plead her way into having a personal one on one session with the Joker. She was prepared for an attack, for cruelty…not for him to woobie up on her and start talking about how he'd been abused brutally by his father. He related a story about a clown that he'd seen at the fair while he was with his father, and how the clown had made him laugh so very hard. How he'd tried to recreate the joke at home, and his father then proceeded to break his nose. "But hey," he told her, "that's the downside of comedy. You're always taking shots from folks who just don't get the joke. Like my dad. Or Batman."
She'd been conned, thoroughly. She'd taken the emotional rollercoaster ride that he'd wanted her to take. She saw him as a "tortured soul crying out for love and acceptance. A lost, injured child looking to make the world laugh at his antics. And there, as always, was the self-righteous Batman…determined to make life miserable for my angel." She was officially in love, and she didn't even try to pretend as if she wasn't. He nudged her along, telling her that she was attracted to him because she was so strict and career-oriented that she'd fallen for the only person who was able to make her laugh and feel free.
When Joker escaped, she was terrified…but not for the world at large, but him. She saw him as a poor, poor soul out in the world alone. When he was returned by batman, battered and beaten, she was outraged, terrified, nearly broken by the event.
Well, not nearly.
She went and got herself a costume, some good old pranks, and broke into Arkham. She'd come to get her man out, get him free and far away from the joker. She was strong and agile, and able to she broke him out, using little tricks (throwing marbles to trip people up) that would make Joker proud. He was happy. She was in love.
Unfortunately, Joker didn't take very well to things like 'being in love'. When Joker was on a winning streak, or Harley was being useful, things were fine. However, when things weren't so rosy? They were down right shitty. Joker regularly tried to kill Harley Quinn, often because she wanted some attention and loving. At best, he would throw her out. And when he did? Her rage usually focused on the object of the Joker's obsession: Batman. In fact, Harley usually comes very close to killing Bats when she does it on her own. The only thing that stops her is that Joker never is very happy with the plan, so he usually wrecks it, either on purpose or accidentally. In the end though? After he's through shooting her, beating her, throwing her out of windows?
He always apologizes and takes her back.
The Joker isn't the only on in Harley Quinn's life, however. During one of these particularly long breakups, Poison Ivy, sexy manhating, plant loving diva that she is, stumbles upon Harley. She finds herself rather fond of Harley, partially because Joker is such an abusive asshole that Ivy goes into full feminist mode. Ivy gives Harley more of an edge; using her plants, she makes Harley immune to all poisons/toxins. It also increased her agility significantly. Harley learned quite a bit more self-confidence from Ivy. Their relationship is questionable; in some Aus, they are spelled out as a couple, and in Harley & Ivy, they do live together, and Ivy frequently urges Harley to leave men behind. For the purpose of Saint Edelweiss, I think Poison Ivy had romantic feelings for Harley, but Harley was a little too hung up on Joker to notice (not that she wouldn't have accepted; there's enough mutual tension between the two).
Harley comes to St. Edelweiss during one of her epic falling outs with Joker. So prepare for moodiness on a personal level, and delight and excitement at her newest task.
CHARACTER PERSONALITY:
Harley Quinn wants very badly to be taken seriously. Unfortunately, there is nothing in her personality that leans towards anyone taking her seriously. Ever.
Harley wants love and infamy, and it shows in pretty much everything she does. She's stubborn and sets high goals for herself. She wants to be noticed, desperately. She was used to being the prettiest, the most talented (as a gymnast), and charming everyone over to her side. She's resourceful, since she always was able to find some way to get what she wants. Unfortunately, she's not very practical about it.
She's not as insane as most people think she is either. Oh, she's very crazy; in love with the Joker, willing to sacrifice everything for him, up to and including her life plan, she has to be called crazy. However, she's sane enough to be able to play sane when it suits her. She's also far more intelligent than she first comes off; her first impression is likely to be immature and/or unimpressive. After modeling herself into Joker's 'ideal' woman, if she doesn't come in firing, she's accustomed to a bit of an eye roll when she first makes her presence known.
She's over-dramatic and moody, and it's likely that these were personality traits that she…'acquired' from her time spent with the Joker. She loves extremes, and loves being a little bit on the strange side. This means that she's either bawling or laughing hysterically.
Harley is also a romantic, but the problem arises in that her sense of romance has been affected by her love of danger and sociopaths. She wants CHILDREN, lots and lots of CHILDREN, but she imagines them blowing up banks and killing baby!batmans. She wants a romantic evening, but this may involve holding a restaurant hostage as they serve her and Joker exotic meals.
POSITION: Nurse
HOW IS THIS CHARACTER APPROPRIATE FOR THIS SETTING: She's so insane that she's in love with the Joker and thinks that they are meant to be. No matter how many times that she's had him try to kill her, or she's tried to kill him. She swoons at true crazy, and would have a million and one ways to torment all the patients. Also? She blew her way through school. The girl would be spouting mental disorders like she knew her stuff.
WERE THIS CHARACTER A PATIENT, WHAT WOULD THEIR POTENTIAL DIAGNOSIS BE:
Hybristophilia: Harley is attracted to bad, bad boys. Namely, the bad boy.
Stockholm Syndrome: Connected to the above, while she wasn't ACTUALLY kidnapped, she was manipulated and charmed by a complete psychopath while on the job. Alternately, since Joker usually doesn't ACTUALLY love her…erotomania, believing that the Joker is in a long term loving relationship with her.
Borderline Personality Disorder: Harley lives in a world of black and white extremes. She's either floating on cloud nine, being a woman scorned, or down so far in the dumps that the heel of your boot looks really high up to her. Her moods are exhausting and manipulative to anyone that has to deal with her. She's jealous, moody, and wants what she wants immediately. If she doesn't get it? Well, chaos befalls us all.
BEHAVIOR TOWARDS PATIENTS: She's going to be moody as hell. She says exactly what she thinks and can come off equal parts petulant and sweet and disturbed. She's not as broken as Joker; she doesn't speak in those strange little speech patterns and sticks to one persona instead of a few dozen. She's going to have no problem being a "Good Doctor". Unfortunately? She's so extreme and WRONG about psychiatry that this won't be good for anyone involved.
METHOD OF PATIENT TREATMENT: She would do whatever she thought was necessary at the time, whether or not it was…appropriate. Electroshock when she's never used the machine before? Diagnosing someone as repressing deep dark memories when they've told her already what was bothering them? She DOES have a degree in psychology, so she is qualified…but barely.
PREDICTED BEHAVIOR/PLANS: She worked a long time to go to medical school, and work at Arkham. She left Arkham because of Joker, but without him there, with the assurance that she was a 'qualified' medical professional? She'd bask in it. She'd dive right in, talking to patients, arranging therapy, working with other doctors. She'd do it all with a lively mood-whether it's excitedly happy or pouty or angry, however, is unpredictable.
Also? She's going to use her job to get over Joker. We'll see how well that works.
BLURB: If there's anything this red and black clad blondie has learned in her time following Mister J around Gotham, it's that laughter is the best medicine. Harleen Quinzel is more than willing to share her special brand of humor with any patient who needs it. And if this spunky little nurse is the only one laughing? She'll be more than happy to keep going until you learn to laugh.

THIRD PERSON:
She was completely and utterly prepared for her first day at work. She tucked away a stray lock of hair before smiling at her reflection.
"Pow, girl," she whispered to herself, aiming her fingers towards her reflection like a gun. "You'll knock those crazies dead." She tilted her head and reconsidered her words carefully. If she did that, she might get herself in trouble. And hell, while the digs weren't exactly five star, it definitely beat wandering around and trying to round up her own team of henchmen.
"Okay, okay, so not dead," She amended. Crossing her arms over her chest, she winked at her reflection. "But definitely off their feet."
She had everything planned out for her first therapy. She'd considered hug therapy, but then thought better of it. After all, she had to save those joy buzzers for the solid handshakes she was going to give everyone when she introduced herself.
She chewed on her lip, still grinning in excitement. It had been a long time since she'd worked in an asylum, but as far as Harley could see, she'd done a bang up job of it the first time around. Sure, she might have blown up a few guards and broken criminal out of a mental hospital, but she had to do it, for her snookums-
--And thinking about that was a good way to make her smile turn upside down, wasn't it? She sniffled for a minute, and shook her head. No, she was somebody now, without him. She was Nurse Quinzel. And that was snazzy. Hella snazzy.
On second thought? She would do some hug therapy. She gathered up a couple of joy buzzers. After all, crazy guys needed affection too!
FIRST PERSON:
Hello patients!
I'm your newest nurse, Harleen Quinzel. You can all call me Nurse Quinzel, kay-kay? And if you're really good, I'll let you all call me Harley.
Well, first thing's first, right? Gotta make sure you're all on the ROAD TO RECOVERY, don't we? So why don't we all sit down and-
[the sound of a crash and fall. And the…]
HA! HA!
Oh jeez, you shoulda seen your face! Oh man, the banana gag…gets them every time!
[clears her throat. You can still hear her grinning.]
Now, where were we?
NOTES: If this application was accepted, I would drop Darien Fawkes and NPC!Joker.
