I note that the previous post answers not at all the question of whether gay marriage or civil unions should be permitted by the government, which does seem relevant to the original topic. I have to imagine they should be, if we the people want them, and the Church shouldn't really care that much. Non-Christians celebrate Christmas just fine; it's a different holiday for them, certainly, less hopeful, less sad. But we don't tell them they can't celebrate it; they're perfectly well entitled to their pre-Christian midwinter festival, and we hope they enjoy it. The fact that they use our name for historical reasons might be a bit irksome in a fall-of-Christendom sort of way, but that's our problem. And yet, even with most people thinking about Santa before Christ, you can still find a midnight mass on December 24. Just so with marriage. The possibility (and indeed, inevitability) of a gay Christian couple wanting to undergo sacramental marriage is strange, and I have no response at present, though I'm certain they'll be able to find somewhere to perform the ceremony. Vancouver, say.
