I came home from work feeling discouraged and cranky and small. but determined not to let it cast a shadow on my evening. so I put on The Most Wonderful Jacket In The World ( brick coloured velvet, military style ), and went for a walk through the freaky-warm mid-November dark to
an art centre, in an old church in Newtonville to see
Rivers and Tides which is a beautiful and meditative documentary about
Andy Goldsworthy. I knew about him already, as my parents have his coffee-table book and have also given it to many people they know. The reason my parents have the book, though, is that Andy's work reminded a friend of theirs of *them*. Because my parents have always played with patterns and colours on the beach, and in the forest. And some of what Andy says in the movie.. about his art being a way to connect the energy in himself to the energy running through the land, is very close to my personal spirituality, some of which came from my parents.
The art center was also opening a new fundraising show, themed "Icons and Altars". All the art was donated by the artists, and it is an interesting variety. They have a kind of lottery-auction to sell them off. Some very powerful things, some fun, some that didn't touch me at all. It's free, if you're ever over in Newton, I suggest taking a peek! ( and feel free to drop by for tea, too! :) )
