I started playing the flute because I loved my parents' James Galway record: Song of the Seashore. I've been trying to find sheet music for it, which may not actually exist, to inspire me to play again. The library doesn't have it. I can't find it online. I don't even know what kind of store to look for.

I want to own a small bookstore. I'm not sure this is financially feasible now that you can buy books online. But I love the atmosphere of bookstores and libraries. There were two tiny stores in Ottawa where you could walk in and the person at the counter would be able to tell you something about any book you picked up. One specialized in fantasy and science fiction; the other in political and philosophical non-fiction. You'd have to somehow create a community: author readings, or kids groups, or book clubs or something; make it not just a place to buy books.

I had pet mice when I was in elementary school. They lived in an acquarium with lots of cedar shavings, a squeaky wheel, and whatever we gave them to play with. They were a reward from my mother, for quitting sucking my thumb. I was nine years old and she said I could have *anything* I wanted if I quit. She says she's lucky I picked something cheap. :) I still have a thing for mouse figurines.

One of my favourite (kid's) books is Trumpet of the Swan. Louis is a mute swan, and his father steals a trumpet from a music store for him (nevermind that there's no way a bird could play a brass instrument!). When Louis finds out the trumpet is stolen, he decides he needs to get a job to pay back the music store. It has a charming Boston sequence where he gets a job playing his trumpet for the people on the Swan Boat ride, and orders watercress sandwiches in the Park Plaza hotel.

I vote Green(in Canada). The Green party in Canada is not as far left as you might expect. I'm very impressed with their efforts to publish broad, balanced, and realistic policy documents and create an alternative voice, despite never having had an elected Member of Parliament. Actually, perhaps their status as a fringe party *allows* them to concentrate on policy over politics. There's a law in Canada that gives federal funding($1.75 per vote) to parties for every vote they receive, if they have over 2% of the vote. So voting for a fringe party isn't entirely a throw-away choice. The Greens won 4.5% of the vote in the last election(Jan 2006). Some environmental policy ideas in anticipation of the Conservative Green Plan being released shortly : http://www.greenparty.ca/downloads/GP2-Report-Eng.pdf

The reddressgnome thing...is from a Massive Multi-Player Online Role Playing Game. Yes, I played Everquest for several years. It was fun, and Steve and I had a good community of friends there. I was a gnome mage, and as in real life, I preferred red duds. I also played Earth & Beyond for a while, and now play Final Fantasy 11. We're down to only once a week, but it's still fun to explore another world and throw some magic around. :)

this whole journal is random things about me, who needs memes! :p i don't tag back, run with it if you want to!
