The best workplaces I've ever been in were those with strict rules against too much socializing while working. It was believed that leaving your personal life at home and no gossiping put everyone on a certain level of equality that resulted in fewer arguments and feelings of resentment toward the other workers. It really worked. Everyone felt more respected and happier, and were able to do their jobs better.
Anyway, I am glad that your attitude is more positive than your coworkers'. You should never have to explain yourself to others. And you are so right - looks should never be something important. I don't like dwelling on the superficial to the detriment of the really important things about people.
Anyway, I just wanted to give you a pat on the back. :)
