in the great tradition of going to coachella every year (
2004,
2005,
2006,
2007,
2008) i bring you coachella 2009!!! cracket.
so we were a small bunch this time as it was just
jeric,
kelly and
i. i drove us up there with very little traffic at all. we hit claim jumpers on the way up and got how full! yeah we were in pain but we somehow didn't crap our pants on the way up. what? okay. we got to the motel 6 and i was all confused by the price but it was cool because it was the tax that was a lot more than i thought it'd be. whatever. so we get in and seriously disco nap (a term coined by alice - mr. roller's wife)! then off early to the annual
filter coachella kick off party!! this time was a lot better than the previous ones because they filtered out the locals! i think they're the ones that tend to cause trouble and all that. the list was actually a list this time and they didn't just let anyone rsvp! i just happened to know a guy who knew a guy. eh! also i didn't get arrested and/or in a fight!!! the three of us drank tons, got free shit,
started dancefloors,
played with a
manikin, played with the
manikin more, made
friends,
played bass and called it a day around midnight when the liquor was gone! then we went to
spotlight 29 where
jeric won $300+ dollarz!!! rad!!! so yeah started off awesome and stayed that way! now to my one line reviews...
friday
- ate, um, burger king
- got in fast with tactics but the pat down guy made me roll down my pants holding up the line! how annoying was that. eh!
-
ryan bingham was the first act i saw and he was a lot more rocking than i thought he'd be! still good though all around.
- gui boratto was totally chill.
-
los campesinos! were totally fun! they played a rad cover of 'box elder'!
- the ting tings were totally fun despite their limited catelog.
- franz ferdinand were okay but i think better last time at coachella?
- leonard cohen was cool but i didn't know his stuff and sadly left before hallelujah.
-
morrissey is a weirdo that just complained the whole time.
-
paul mccartney fucking rocked!!! randomness for like 30 minutes and then 10 hours of awesome beatle
hits from 'a day in the life' to 'helter skelter'... lots of wings too! best of the day naturally.
- sat in lot for an hour or something going in serious circles.
saturday
- i forgot where we went this morning no wait, wienerschnitzel? yeah. i had to look up the spelling too.
- used better tactics and got in faster but to a weird parking lot.
-
thenewno2 were okay.
jeff lynne walking around was rad.
- dr. dog were serious craacket.
-
superchunk fucking owned this day!!! i got up close and had a lot of fun with the fans. good to see them around again.
- tv on the radio were better than i thought they'd be.
- booker t & the dbt's were all random! how much legend though!
- TRV$DJ-AM i didn't want to see at first but i'm glad i did! i enjoyed it a lot but it was basically like a dj playing rock hits with a guy playing drums to it... and then warren g came out! that was rad!
- M.I.A. was totally rad again but how far back and i can't help but think of the time E and I saw her at the echoplex and she put the mic in E's face!
- the chemical brothers (dj set) was okay; they're waaaay awesome live though.
- the killers i saw for a couple songs were not as bad as i thought.
- mastodon was cool too but i only knew the first song, ha!
- got home when someone liberated us by breaking a fence! that was rad!
sunday
- i think i woke up late while j+k ate at coco's? that's cool! we still got in earlyish.
- friendly fires looked pretty fun but i only caught a song. i'm seeing them open for blur in london so i'm excited for that!
- fucked up were pretty insane! the only moshing i saw all weekend!
- busy p was rad!!! but why does that aoki guy have to sit behind him and leach vibes?
- lykke li was pretty cool but serious weird chill music when it's like 130 degrees out in the sun!
-
yeah yeah yeahs were really great. it was a lot less karen o running and jumping but that's the nature of the new album. the new songs sounded great live too.
- my bloody Valentine were epic bliss. yeah they were loud. yeah they scared some cure fans and even made some enemies but i loved it. the halocaust was 15+ minutes of rad. definitely a great way to end a weekend and the bands i saw after were weird sounding.
- public enemy were cool and there was a lot of energy there but i was like what?
- the kills sounded really good but i think they'd be a better venue band.
-
throbbing gristle were all kinds of random but i liked it and i'm not sure why.
-
etienne de crecy got too much hype for his cube and i was thinking it'd be awesome but was just some lights. that's cool. they should have erupted the whole tent!!! oh well.
- got out super fast while the cure played.
- made fun of the LA times blog at the local IHOP
- LA times bloggers turned around and said HI!
- not sure who got faced!
i missed a lot of stuff i wanted to see like a place to bury strangers, paul weller, the presets, girl talk and crystal castles but i've seen them all in better venues... well except aptbs! oh well. and that's that i guess! yay! randomness! i don't think anyone reads livejournal anymore but it's cool. it's supposed to be for me in the first place right?! right! next day we checked out and ate at the buffet at a casino! how much food!!! then just went home! yaaah! great weekend! glad jeric and kelly went otherwise i'd be some serious solo fighter! saw alli randomly once. saw christine too who i only ever seem to see there! and umm... yeah! i'm hoping for pavement, chavez, shipping news, hum and pulp in 2010!
