inpointoffact 01 - Motion
The smallest motion, unnoticed and unheeded by most, would bring Simon's attention snapping back to his sister.
02 - Cool
Her touch was cool this morning; she'd been dancing in the cargo bay again, where the air and the floor was cold and lonely.
03 - Young
With River trembling and sobbing into his chest over a sick cow, Simon couldn't decide whether this made her incredibly young or impossibly old.
04 - Last
With her brother at her side, River knew the confusion wouldn't last forever and that was more of a comfort than any medication he could give her.
05 - Wrong
Even when she was wrong, which was rare enough to be of no consequence, Simon let her be right; her tantrum wasn't worth it.
06 - Gentle
Simon's touch was gentle, like she was a precious flower in a garden full of weeds that would twist and darken her if he didn't keep perfect care of her.
07 - One
"Just one more day," insisted River, and Simon couldn't help but stay on board for just a little longer.
08 - Thousand
Every second dragged out more and Simon told himself that in just one more moment he'd look away from his beautiful, gracefully dancing sister, but after a thousand had passed his eyes were still fixed.
09 - King
There was a story River told once many years ago, full of noble Kings and beautiful Princesses, and now as Simon told it back to her in a troubled moment it sounded all the sweeter.
10 - Learn
River learnt that the best way to hold every tiny piece of Simon's attention was to sit as close as she could, their fabrics brushing tight against each other.
11 - Blur
Some days dragged; this, however, passed in a fiery blur as River nearly met her end.
12 - Wait
"Wait," said River, holding out an arm to stop him leaving her bunk; after such a day, though, she wanted him to remind her that she was more than just a 'witch'.
13 - Change
The subtle change in River's flickering gaze, from lonely to longing, had Simon shaking his head and pacing out of the room before he could fall into that impossible trap.
14 - Command
"Leave me alone," snapped Simon the next morning, and spent the rest of the day feeling absurdly guilty.
15 - Hold
That night, Simon stayed when River asked; holding her close was the only way to stop her desperate tears.
16 - Need
"Promise you'll never leave me," she begged, proclaiming honestly that he was the only thing that she really needed to keep her grounded and he might as well stop the medication for all the use it was.
17 - Vision
After he promised to stay, she wouldn't let him leave her sight; and though he couldn't see her, it still felt like her eyes were on him as he had his nightly wash.
18 - Attention
"I'm never going to leave you mei-mei," he promised, but her busy mind had already turned elsewhere - he could never hold her attention for that long, but she held his indefinitely.
19 - Soul
When River said she was nothing but a soulless machine, Simon kissed her forehead lightly and whispered that he could never believe that.
20 - Picture
Simon took a capture, once, of his sister just before she went to that place and he watched it now more than he would like to admit; when River caught him, she just smiled.
21 - Fool
"You think I don't know how much you care about me," said River, "and that makes you a fool, pretty brother."
22 - Mad
Sometimes Simon could almost forget how broken River was, but today, as she flung herself angrily around the bunk ripping and breaking things because she wasn't allowed planetside, he got a harsh reminder.
23 - Child
He held her like a child when she calmed, all wrapped up in his strong arms, but she no longer felt small and shapeless and Simon cursed himself for noticing his sister's beautiful, maturing body.
24 - Now
Their parents had always refused to let them share a bed, saying that it was inappropriate; now, though, they rarely slept alone.
25 - Shadow
One night, the shadows in the corner had come to get her; she violently flung herself into Simon's bed and somehow, he didn't mind that he was winded as she tangled herself up in him for safety.
26 - Goodbye
The next morning, River felt the shame that licked at her brother's mind as she curled into his chest and, embarrassed, she crawled away without the smallest of goodbyes.
27 - Hide
It got to the point where they assumed River had been kidnapped; though they searched the entire ship, she could not be found.
28 - Fortune
There was a fortune in hiding places and River flitted between them until at last Simon was more worried than ashamed; then, she knew, she could show her face again.
29 - Safe
"Where did you go, mei-mei?" he asked, but all she would say as she stood across the room from him was that she'd been somewhere safe, away for a while.
30 - Ghost
She was hollow after that, quiet as a ghost and almost as translucent and Simon felt himself wasting away with her.
31 - Book
It took until that capture slipped out of the pages of an archaic book for River to remember how much her brother loved her; the shame was just part of that which she would have to live with or destroy.
32 - Eye
There was something in River's dark eyes as she strode over to him that had Simon's stomach doing back flips.
33 - Never
Simon sank himself further into the Doctor role out of defence; he'd never had thought that his own sister would summon up such intense, wrong emotions.
34 - Sing
Kaylee would sometimes sing as she paced the halls; the jealousy that Simon noticed her and smiled had River deciding that something had to change.
35 - Sudden
Simon thought it sudden when River pressed her lips to his; River, however, thought it had dragged out forever.
36 - Stop
River realised too late that Simon wasn't expecting this, which just proved how clueless he was; still, she couldn't stop, and just pressed herself closer to him as he sat rigid with surprise.
37 - Time
Simon had believed that time was linear and constant but his faith in that logic faltered as the seconds in which their lips touched twisted and turned and dragged out until his breath caught.
38 - Wash
The kiss washed away the worry better than any therapy ever could.
39 - Torn
When it broke, he was torn between the urge to stop it from ever happening again - which is what he should have done - or just pulling her even closer to feel those lips again.
40 - History
It felt like, in that moment, no one in history had ever loved a person as much as River loved her brother, and it hurt to keep it all in for any longer; "I love you," she admitted, with a barefaced honesty that made Simon blush.
41 - Power
She hated the cliché of love as a magnet; yet she knew it was that power which would bring Simon back soon after he left.
42 - Bother
A day passed and still Simon hadn't made up his mind so River just flowed into his room, not caring if he was busy or if she was bothering him at an inopportune moment.
43 - God
"River!" he exclaimed, in the same tone one might use for the phrase 'oh my God', and it made his sister grin in a way he'd never seen from her before.
44 - Wall
The walls were the only steady things in the room as, a few tense moments later, River's trembling hand pressed against his shoulder while she lowered herself onto the bed.
45 - Naked
She didn't need to be naked to feel the heat of her brother's body, but it helped.
46 - Drive
She felt the passion drive into her, hotter than she had ever imagined, and she was glad Simon couldn't protest because she felt like she would die if this flame fizzled out.
47 - Harm
"I don't want to hurt you," whispered Simon, and though River was impressed that he could speak whilst concentrating so hard on the hand between her legs, she dismissed the words because she was stronger than he could ever be.
48 - Precious
Like a precious stone he smoothed his hand over her surface, bringing up the shine from underneath until her entire body shook with it.
49 - Hunger
She didn't know how to sate the hunger he inspired in her, but she knew he'd show her if she waited long enough.
50 - Believe
She couldn't believe in a God; such an illogical theory, but she could believe in Simon as he stripped away her reality and left her crying out into the black.
