Oh my god. I am finally finished with my first week of school. I'm satisfied with all my classes and interpreters (minus the one I mentioned in my last post, of course). But wow. I haven't had this amount of workload since high school. All my classes are gonna suck the life out of my life. So MANY exams, projects, and papers to do. Crap ( Read more... )

I know, I was so confused. Like I said, I think it's probably because it's her first time encountering a deaf person. It was rude though. Thanks, girl. :)

You may have been the first deaf person she encountered, but there is such a thing as tact. What if she saw someone with shingles on their face? Would she have rejected with abject horror, screamed and ran away? It was extremely rude.

At least stare from afar like civilized people.

i don't understand why she would have that sort of a reaction. i went to school with a few kids who were deaf. i even helped out in a special education glass with a mute little girl. i just ... i'm totally baffled.

Yeah, me too. I guess she was in the dark when it comes to deaf people. Idk. I would have shrugged it off but today was a bad day and I just...ughhh. Haha

Well, see thats kind of the thing. The people who have had exposure to the deaf (no offense intended) aren't surprised by it. Imagine you'd gone all your life seeing nothing but white people. Italians, Irish, etc. Nothing but white faces. All of the sudden, one day, a black person (or african american, I don't know how PC i should be here) shows up. You've never seen someone who is black before, what is your reaction?

I'm not saying its right that she FREAKED OUT, because even if its something you've never seen polite society dictates that you act in a tactful, pleasant manner, but not everyone has had exposure to the deaf community. Hell, if it wasn't for whatever reason I signed up for ASL years ago (and some Law and Order SVU episodes) I'd have no idea the deaf community existed.

If that stupid girl has never met a deaf person in her whole life then she must have been living in a cave somewhere. If that is how she reacts to simply having a deaf person trying to communicate with her then she doesn't need to be working with the public.

I hope your cold goes away and you get well soon. :)
