It's going to be a quiet day today -- it's the last day of classes before the Thanksgiving break. My boss is out of town, my work study asked for the day off at the last minute (which means I'm here until 5 p.m. today - HATE), and I gave my graduate assistant the day off. So I wore jeans. Which probably means that the president will stop by to wish the suckers dedicated workers who work on the last day before a break a happy holiday. Not that he'd care about me wearing jeans. Maybe. I don't know -- it's weird working in an academic building because the profs wear jeans when they want, and the secretaries will wear jeans or other casual clothing sometimes, too. But the people who work in Publications (in the office next door) don't dress casually. I didn't have a "dress code" expectation when I worked at the library -- I could wear jeans and sweatshirts if I wanted, and most of the time I did. But I got bored and felt schlumpy after awhile. I like dressing in work clothes with an occasional (like, weekly would be nice) casual day.

Funniest thing happened on the way in to my office. Linds was with me and the chair of the Computer Science Department (whose office is just down the hall -- he stops is frequently) stopped to say hello. Now, this guy's son was in Sally's graduating class, but Lindsay knew him as well. And the prof has seen all the pictures of ALL my kids and hasn't quite grasped what the situation is, I don't think. He's asked about my daughter before and the nature of the questions made me suspect he was talking about Sally. So I've answered and tried to specify that I was talking about my stepdaughter so he wouldn't be confused. Fast forward to today. We walk in the building and he stops to say good mornng.

Him: "This is your daughter, I presume?"

Me: "Yes" (makes introductions)

Him: "Is this the bright one?"

Me: Blinks.

Linds: Blinks.

Me (with my usual social grace): "Well, this isn't Sally -- she's at Cornell -- but, I mean, yes..."

Linds: Smirks.

Him: "Well, she must get it from you."

Me: "HAHAHA, yes! I mean, thanks!"

He leaves and barely gets up the stairs before Lindsay and I collapse in laughter. I of COURSE made matters worse by trying to explain to Lindsay that I wasn't trying to insult her, but that he always mixes her up with Sally, and...OH JUST SHUT UP ALREADY!

Lindsay said, "Don't worry, Mom, I know you don't think I'm dumb."

OMG, I am totally giggling here as I remember it. If COURSE I think my daughter is "bright" -- he just tripped me up with his damn phrasing. And I am an idiot.

OK, well, I've got a lot to do over the weekend, and since it is so quiet here, I'm hoping I can get some work done on the website today.
