I'm beating the new student rush! ;-)
True Blood
True Blood is an HBO series based on "The Southern Vampire Mysteries" novel series by Charlaine Harris. In this world, vampires have recently "come out of the closet" due to the invention of a synthetic blood substitute ("Tru Blood") and are living side-by-side with humans. Some vampires want to "mainstream" and fit in with humans as best as they can, while others consider themselves superior and think humans are just cattle. At the same time, some humans are obsessed with vampires and their lifestyle, but there are also several factions of humans who consider vampires abominations that must be destroyed. There are also several other types of supernatural creatures, but none of them are as open about their existence as vampires.
Jessica
Jessica Hamby is a "baby vamp," meaning she hasn't been a vampire for very long (just about a month or so). So she's a little -- okay, a lot -- confused as to how things work, mainly due to her slacker deadbeat vampire daddy. But she's not bitter.
Jessica is 17 years old -- for life. She's close to her 18th birthday but she's always going to look 17. For almost all her life she had a very strict upbringing. She was raised by devout Christian parents in a small town in Louisiana. She wasn't allowed any sort of cell phone or computers, she couldn't date or listen to rock music, and she was frequently beaten by her father if she disobeyed the rules in any way. Her mother apparently ignored her father's behavior.
Through her friends Jessica was exposed to pop culture and non-Christian music, and when she was invited to sneak out to a friend's party, she eagerly accepted. Of course, it didn't go well. She was kidnapped by vampires and given to Bill Compton so that he could turn her into a vampire to replace one he had killed. But after the initial fear and confusion, she was psyched about this turn of events. She didn't have to obey her parents any longer and was free to explore life without restrictions.
The vampires Eric Northman and Pam taught her a little bit while Bill abandoned her and ran left her under their supervision for two weeks, but Eric returned her to Bill's care where she belonged (and because Eric found her and her youthful enthusiasm annoying). She was supposed to be Bill's responsibility, though Bill really wanted no part of it. Jessica did bond with Sookie Stackhouse, Bill's girlfriend, and convinced Sookie to take her to see her family, who thought she had been kidnapped. Jessica was pleased to see her mother and sister, but when her father returned and wanted to beat her for disappearing, she turned against him and fought back, almost killing him. Bill had to step in to glamour the family into forgetting about what had happened. After that Bill took his responsibility to teach her a little more seriously, but still refused to show her how to drink from a human without killing them, which resulted in her accidentally killing a trucker on her first attempt to feed. At the same time, Bill disappeared (kidnapped by werewolves), leaving Jessica on her own again with no clue how to deal with the trucker's body.
She's coming to Fandom right after that point. She's recently broken it off with her human boyfriend, her maker is missing, and she has a body under the floorboards. It's enough to make any girl run away from home and find herself in Fandom.
As a baby vamp, Jessica has little idea of what she's capable of and is constantly learning things like the fact that when she cries, her tears are made of blood now. Without the guidance of her maker she's been floundering. At the same time, she's been enjoying her newfound freedom, including sleeping with a man for the first time (though she has a wee problem with her body healing to its virginal state after each time, oops), dressing like she wanted, and learning to use things like a computer (and starting her own blog). She's generally a sweet and well-mannered girl, but sometimes prone to temper tantrums (such as pouring bottles of Tru Blood down the sink when she got upset with Bill or glamouring customers not to leave tips for Arlene at Merlotte's). She's not overly aggressive, but when insulted her temper can get the better of her. She's insatiably curious about what she can do now and is eager to learn more.
Jessica isn't from the same timeline as
justwantsquiet. But she knows the Sookie from her world.
Abilities:
* Enhanced strength and speed (though she doesn't know how to use them well)
* Enhanced senses (sight, hearing, smell).
* Her body heals at an accelerated pace (even faster if she drinks blood)
* Glamour (hypnotize) humans -- she has an enhanced ability for this, even greater than vampires who are older than her. This, of course, is strictly with OOC consent and likely wouldn't work on telepaths (as Sookie is canonically immune). See OCD below!
Weaknesses:
* Silver is very painful. Jessica can be immobilized if bound with silver chains.
* Sunlight will burn and ultimately destroy her if she remains in it too long (though at a slower pace than older vampires).
* Stake through the heart will kill her dead and turn her into a pile of red goop that will fill a Waterford candy dish.
* Jessica can't enter any human's home without being invited inside. Places of business don't count.
* She must rest during the day or she'll get "the Bleeds" -- blood leaking out of her ears and nose.
