What always gets me is the lost ability to expand comments. I always say I'm not going to renew my account and then I go to read a post with a lot of collapsed threads and within minutes I'm busting out the credit card.

No, just that you must expand one comment in a thread at a time. I *believe* there's a Greasemonkey script which does this for you, but I have no experience with these scripts, so I'm no great source on this.

Yeah - the Adblock addon for Firefox gets rid of pretty well all ads. It is wonderful!
