Kris’ stomach felt twisted up into knots, and he could feel - and see the occasional times he’d catch himself in the mirror - the black feathers behind him buzzing with his nerves. Katy and… Micah, were going to be there that day, and the last time he saw Katy…

He shuddered, going all the way through his wings to the very tips, where they vibrated against something very much solid.

“Kris?” Adam’s hands closed around the black feathers, stroking down as he moved in between them and right up against Kris’ back. “Kris, it’s gonna be okay… There’s no need to be nervous.” When Kris’ shaking doesn’t stop, Adam sighs, brings his arms down to wrap around Kris’ waist and hug him, his wings brushing along his thighs. “Babe, come on. Just calm down, breathe…”

Kris breathed, trying for long, deep gulps of air, but he still felt unnerved for some reason. He rolled his eyes at himself; he had plenty of reasons to be nervous, what was he thinking.

When Kris didn’t seem to stop shaking Adam sighed, stroking his wings lovingly for a moment before he pulled away. “Come on, how about a bit of flying. Maybe it’ll help you unwind.”

I’m not leaving you here alone… He felt every muscle clench just at the thought of Adam being left alone with them. He couldn’t really explain why, though. Thankfully, when he started toward the back balcony, Adam was following him, his ivory wings stretching out as well as they could in the hall. He got a wide, freckled smile, and Adam’s hand around his, before they were both up in the sky, the wind whipping around him and the sound of their combined wing-beats almost calming.

He’d almost gotten to a normal state of breathing and all of his muscles to relax when his phone buzzed in his pocket, and everything he’d pushed out of his mind came rushing back. He waivered in the air, falling a few feet before Adam caught up with him and held him, frowning against his neck as he carried the both of them back.

What’s wrong with me? Kris grimaced at himself as Adam settled him gently back on his feet. It’s just Katy, the Katy you’ve known for pretty much all of your life, you don’t freak out about Katy. And she already apologized for what happened before… it’s not going to happen again, just calm the hell down!

Taking a huge mouthful of air, Kris settled on the bed and fingered out chords onto his leg, Adam taking out the phone to peek at the text. “It’s Katy.” He muttered, glancing up at Kris. “She says they’re almost here.”

Oh shit. Kris shook himself and fluttered his wings a few times, trying to shake out all the nerves. You’re good, you’re good. Taking one last deep breath, Kris nodded and stood up, following Adam down when they could hear the mechanics of the security gate working to open. Kris counted off the seconds in his head, his wings wrapping around his waist protectively, stroking down the feathers that got loose in their flight while Adam just stood calmly by his side. He’s… he’s being strong for me… Kris’ heart swelled for the quick second they had, then someone was knocking on the door. Adam let out a breath, like he’d been holding it the entire time, and opened the door.

It was the beginning of all hell breaking loose.

Katy smiled when she first saw Kris, albeit it was strained, but still… It was better than the last time he saw her. Kris swallowed, standing still as he held the door open and watched her. He… he didn’t really know what to do.

Thankfully, Adam was there. “Hey Katy.” He smiled and leaned down, hugging her lightly, giving her a little squeeze at the end like Kris had seen him do so many other times before. She was smiling right back at him, thankfully.

“Adam.” She pulled back a little and looked over him, her eyes stopping for a moment over his wings but the soft smile on her face not fading. “You look good.”

Adam shrugged, then tugged Kris off of the door with an arm around his waist. “I have Kris to thank for that.”

Her smile faltered for a moment when she dropped her gaze to Kris, but it wasn’t… it wasn’t the look he’d been expecting, instead she looked guilty. “I… I’m sorry Kris… For… how I acted the last time we saw each other.” She stepped forward and pulled him into her arms, squeezing him tight. “I just… I didn’t know how to react. I’m sorry…”

Kris blinked for a moment, before he wrapped his arms around her and hugged her lightly. She didn’t feel quite right in his arms anymore, like he thought she did before. He frowned; it was weird to have something not feel right with Katy…

He looked up when he heard someone else walking up, and… his wings twitched, an itch starting between the ridges when he saw him. He was roughly Kris’ height, maybe a few inches taller, and had messy brown hair and brown-hazel eyes and tan skin. He looked innocent enough, but there was something… something was off.

The man smiled when he got close enough, tucking Katy under his arm as he grinned at him. “You must be Kris.” The smile turned into a smirk and he held a hand out. “Micah, so nice to finally meet you.”

Despite the buzzing under his skin, Kris started to reach out, but suddenly Adam’s hand was there, grabbing Kris’, a pleasant smile on his face that was just slightly off. “Pleasure.” He tucked his wings in, and Kris watched as he hid the bare spot where feathers were ripped out by the man in the studio well behind him. What’s going on? Adam backed up a few steps despite the other’s confusion, and gestured for the couple to go into the living room. “Why don’t you two go and sit, I want to have a word with Kris.”

What’s going on? Adam?

Kris felt even more confused when he just hit a barrier in Adam’s mind, the connection between then cut off for the moment. Adam waited until the other couple disappeared into the living room, keeping his eyes on Micah the entire time, his wings shaking just slightly enough for Kris to notice.

“Adam?”

“Shh.” Adam tugged him back toward the bedroom, strides seeming to get more nervous the further they got. The twisting feeling in his gut and the itches between his wings got worse, his own nerves coming back full force and for an entirely different reason.

Adam finally turned them around, pushing the door shut behind Kris and tugging them a little closer to the balcony before he spoke. “I don’t like this… There’s something about that guy that’s…” He shook his head and glanced down at Kris. “Do you feel it? Like there’s something…”

Before Adam finished Kris was nodding; he couldn’t explain what but there was something he didn’t like about him. It felt almost like back that first day he left the house after finding Adam again, the people gathered around him and tugging at his wings. It was different somehow though, he just couldn’t…

“Kris?” His wings buzzed at the knock on the door, straightening and folding around him anxiously. “Katy sent me back here to check on you. You guys alright?”

Kris shook his head and looked up at Adam. But… but if he wanted… wouldn’t he have already…? He knew his thoughts were jumbled, but thankfully Adam seemed to understand.

I.. I don’t know. He brushed a hand through his hair and grimaced. Then glanced up to the door. “Yeah, we’re… we’re alright. Be right out!” He waited a moment then looked back down to Kris. What do you want to do?

I… Kris chewed on his lips for a second, feeling lost and… He let out a breath, shuddering out his anxiety and nodded. “Okay… okay, we’ll go out there and just… have an escape plan, in case.”

Adam nodded then motioned to the door and then to the balcony. “Leave the door open to a straight shot out just in case.” When Kris nodded Adam’s face scrunched up. But… why?

Kris let out a breath. Only one way to find out… He laced his hand tightly with Adam’s and walked out with him, making sure to prop the door open and checking to see that they had a clear path before following Adam out to the main room, where Katy was fidgeting and looking a mix of guilty and anxious, and Micah… Kris felt his wings shudder again and he gritted his teeth. What the hell is it about this guy?

“Sorry just had to talk with Kris about something.” Adam smiled and waved off Katy’s nervous look. “A personal matter.” He squeezed Kris’ arm, pulling him close, wing coming around him protectively.

“Oh.” Katy nodded, looking between the two of them before her eyes settled on Kris and she bit her lip lightly. “Are you sure you’re alright with this, Kris? You seem a bit… nervous.”

Kris nodded, trying to just keep looking at Katy, to ignore that presence in the room that seemed almost suffocating to him, like his wings were bound and he wasn’t getting enough oxygen to try and fight against it. “No, I’m… I’m fine.” He tried to put on his most convincing smile. “Really.”

The room went quiet for a few moments, getting increasingly more awkward, until Katy cleared her throat and spoke again, looking at Adam this time. “Do you think maybe I could talk to Kris alone, for just a bit?”

Adam shrugged. “Sure.” He got up, blue eyes watching Micah as he stood up and walked lazily down the hall. Kris gripped Adam’s wing for a moment before he let his hand trail away, sending him a warning to keep an eye on him and to stay safe before he disappeared down the hall.

Kris sucked down a deep breath, to try and center himself and calm down, and looked up to Katy. “So, um, what do you want to talk about?”

Katy smiled softly. “I missed you.” She blurted, then dropped her eyes to her hands, which were laying in her lap plucking at her jeans. “I’m… I regret what I did, how I reacted, so much but…” She shrugged and looked back up at him, her eyes shimmering a little bit. “I think maybe we weren’t meant to be in the first place, and I think… I sort of realized it then… a little bit.” She shrugged, and Kris stood up as she dropped her gaze back to her hands. “And I think that’s the reason why I… I acted that way.”

Katy’s voice cracked, and that seemed to be the last little crack in her dam before the flood, because in the next moment she was sobbing, curling into Kris when he sat down next to her. She didn’t tense at all when he moved an arm and a wing around her - and did that ever feel weird, as soon as the feathers slipped along her back, that instant feeling of alien and wrong, with Kate.

They just sat there in relative silence for a few moments, Kris trying to soothe her as best he could, when something broke down the hall, and Adam screamed.

Adam wouldn’t answer him, and it… it felt like their connection was… damaged if not completely gone. Kris felt his entire body shaking with fear, just this far from being hysterical.

After the flurry of noise down the hall, Kris was rushing out, already calling for Adam through their link, hearing only static in his head as a response, and when he’d checked on the rooms on the way to their bedroom, with no sign of either Adam or Micah, he settled in front of the bedroom.

The door was sung open, and already he could see glass from the mirror that once sat on top of the dresser scattered across the floor and the top, red smudged around some of the pieces, and a trail of white, freckled feathers leading to the balcony. He swallowed past the lump in his throat, and peered in, finding more destruction in their bed with the sheets torn and ripped, and the headboard broken. He followed the feather trail, and shivered seeing more red, smeared along the floor of the balcony, and the railing.

“Oh god…” Kris’ legs buckled under him and he crashed to the floor, trying to breathe. “Oh god, no… no, no, no, no, no…”

“Kris?” He heard Katy coming up from behind him, voice small and still scratching from crying earlier. Kris closed his eyes, searching for Adam through that link, searching and not finding him. Where the fuck is he?!

Standing up on shaking legs, Kris made his way to the balcony, avoiding the red, and peered over the railing. He didn’t know whether he was relived or terrified at finding nothing down there. He could feel that familiar pain crawling back through him, flaming and hot across his back. Clenching his teeth he glanced back to Katy, who looked… scared, lost. “I… I have to find Adam…” He drew in a deep breath as she nodded and winced. “That… man, Micah he’s…” Kris shook his head. “I don’t know what it is about him, but I think, he had something to do with this.”

Katy just nodded slowly, then grabbed his phone from the nightstand, handing it over to him. “If… If Adam comes back, I’ll call you.”

Kris nodded, giving her a quick hug to try and express just how thankful he was for her at that very moment, then turned and ran off the balcony, climbing up the railing and jumping off and climbing as high as he possibly could in the sky.

Not being able to see any sign of Adam from there, Kris took a moment to think of any place Adam could go to, someplace that was safe. He pulled out his phone, scrolling through his contacts until he got to Leila’s number and punched in, dipping a little lower in the sky so the wind didn’t whip around him as much, then as soon as he heard the phone pick up blurted out. “Leila, have you seen Adam at all?”

The mother was quiet for a moment, then when she finally spoke her voice trembled. “No, I… what happened?”

Kris groaned. “I don’t know.” He sucked in another deep breath. “Look, I’m going to look around for him, could you call around to everyone to find out if they’ve seen them, please?”

Leila let out a sigh that crackled through the speaker. “Yes, I’ll call. Tell me if you find him, Kris.”

Kris just barely stopped himself from throwing his phone away in frustration when she hung up. He tucked it away in his pocket, then soared up again, combing the ground below him for any sign of Adam.

He’d been flying for a while, and the pain had nearly doubled from when he’d left. It was getting more difficult to keep steady. He was just passing over some wooded area when something snapped inside of him, clicking in place, and the pain vanished, and he could just barely feel Adam somewhere close to him.

Kris almost fell out of the air at the feeling, and he let out a sob of relief. He dove down to one of the higher trees, settling on the sturdiest branches and stared out across the woods to see if he could find anything. It took him a minute, but finally he caught an area where it looked like something big hand fallen through the canopy, breaking the branches on the way down. He hopped off his perch and flew closer for a better look, then gasped and fell down through the opening when he saw a few familiar white feathers caught in the branches.

There Adam was, looking small and fragile, his wings tucked around him and… Kris brought his hand to his mouth when he saw the long gash through one of the wings, staining the feathers around it red.

“Adam.” Kris knelt beside him, reaching out for him then pulling back just before touching him, afraid of hurting him. “Oh my god, Adam…”

Adam made a soft whimpering sound and peered up from under his wings. “Kris…” His voice was tiny, broken, and Kris went the extra little bit to bite into his hand to stop from pulling him up into his arms. I don’t know how badly he’s hurt… I don’t want to risk hurting him more…

“What happened?”

Adam sucked in a breath, then winced. “Hurts…” He reached a hand up, and Kris saw another long gash up his arm that was bleeding profusely. Kris cursed and pulled off his shirt, ripping off one of the sleeves and unrolling it before wrapping it around Adam’s arm as a make-shift bandage. He took the remains of the shirt and pressed it lightly to the wound in Adam’s wing. “I…” Adam breathed again, more shallow this time, then looked up at Kris. “He was… going on about something… how… how we were messing with things we shouldn’t be… I don’t know what he was talking about… and…” Adam bit into his lip as the pain got worse suddenly, and he reached for Kris’ hand. “K-Kris… it, it hurts so much…”

Kris bit into his lip to stop from breaking into sobs. He squeezed Adam’s hand gently, then startled when his phone went off in his pocket. He pulled it out and flipped it open without checking the screen. “H-hello?”

“Kris?” Leila’s voice came through the phone, worried, and Kris grimaced. “Did you find Adam?”

Kris drew in a breath and nodded. “Yeah… I-I found him…”

“Kris. What’s wrong? What happened?” Her voice was more panicked now.

“He’s… hurt. Real bad. I…” He looked around. “I don’t know where we are but… I can try to get him to a main road, and call and ambulance.”

“Oh god… I… What can I do to help?”

Kris shifted forward a bit, trying to find the best way to at least help Adam onto his feet. “I… I don’t know. I’ll… When help comes I’ll call you.”

“Okay. Okay…” Leila sounded like she was just barely keeping herself from breaking down, and Kris immediately felt guilty for it. “Just… take care of him, please.”

Kris nodded putting the phone away even before he heard a dial tone then turned his attention fully on Adam. “Okay, is there any place that doesn’t hurt so I can help you get up?”

Adam whimpered and shook his head. “Don’t want to move… hurts…”

Kris choked back tears at his lover’s pain. “I… I know it hurts, baby, but you need to get help.”

Adam hesitated for a moment, then slowly nodded. “My side, it… it doesn’t feel like it’s hurt…”

“Okay…” Kris gripped Adam’s by his good arm, then moved his hand under him, curling his fingers around his waist. “Alright, on three.”

Adam cried out when Kris pushed him up, but after a while they managed to get Adam standing. After a few tries, though, they realized that getting Adam through the trees the way he was injured wasn’t going to be easy, even with Kris helping him. Kris finally lifted Adam up, waiting until Adam’s arms were curled snug around him, then shot up through the tree tops. He made his way to a road that seemed to lead toward the city and landed as gently as he could, setting Adam down and doing a quick check over him to make sure he wasn’t hurt anymore, then pulled his phone out and dialed 911, checking for the road signs before the receptionist picked up.

“We’ll have help there right away, just stay where you are.” Kris nodded then Adam groaned beneath him and he hung up, pressing the shirt to Adam’s injured wing. He looked over Adam’s other wing, seeing several feathers missing, the skin below red and raw. Both wings looked more skin than feather, now, and bruises were already showing up on Adam’s arms and face, and he had scratches from the fall through the trees all over and Kris would be at least a few broken bones.

Adam wheezed and slurred. “Everthin'ss all… dissy, and cold… Tired…”

Fuck, that’s… that’s bad. “No, Adam, you need to stay awake.” He searched for something to try and keep Adam awake, then finally blurted out. “Do you remember this morning?”

Adam’s blue eyes fluttered back open and he breathed for a minute, before he smiled weakly. “Yeah.” He croaked. “I ‘member…”

Kris wrapped his wings around Adam and nodded. “I was so… nervous. And I guess I was freaking out enough for you to wake up…” He let out a wet laugh, brushing a hand through Adam’s hair. “You’ve been so amazing… so brave, for the both of us…” Kris laced his fingers through thick, black strands, grimacing when he felt the something sticky, warm and wet. “I love you so much, so much, Adam…”

In the distance, Kris could hear sirens. He felt relief flood him, then leaned down to kiss him, putting as much passion into it as possible. Please… just… be alright, please… you have to be alright.
