Doctor Who: The Movie Part Deux

The original Variety article about Yates and Doctor Who (which he wants to make into a movie). Apparently this comes with the BBC's blessing and, get this, "Yates made clear that his movie adaptation would not follow on from the current TV series, but would take a completely fresh approach to the material ( Read more... )

What? What?! What?!

Fandom can't even agree if the 1996 movie was canon (OK, fandom can't even agree that New Who is canon, and some people who came on board with New Who don't even seem to know the Classic exists... I digress) .... and to be honest finding the existence of the Cushing films required a bit of digging. There are non-canon, semi-canon, and canon the fandom argues about all over the place already... I don't want another one!

Augghhhh.

(I don't know what it says about me that I'm probably going to flunk the assignment I'm about to turn in, but am excited you posted this because it gives me something else to angst/wail about. But thank you for the distraction from the Thing of Doom that I'd like Ten to swoop in and smite with his screwdriver. :-D )

Fandom can't agree on if the Doctor is half-human (on his mother's side) but the movie is pretty much canon. The audios, books, and comics are more often debated. I think it's crazy having five canons running around but this may be a stupid stunt they're playing, much like the re-boot of the re-boot for BSG. LOL, that went far.

(So...this post was a good thing? Bad thing? I'm so confused.)

BTW, have a screwdriver. ;)

New Who has made no reference to the half-human thing, right? re: that, I might be paying too much attention to some of the denialists at YouTube (who, admittedly, may have legit points that the Doctor changed quite a bit between the old series and the movie/new Who ( ... )

I still haven't decided if I can deal with another movie that's, more importantly, outside of canon. Dealing with Classic and New Who is hard enough as, way too many times, they contradict each other and I have to shrug it off.

Of course, I still dont' see why he can't create a movie based on time traveling sci-fi in general. Why must it be Doctor Who? IDEK.

WHAT ! NO NO NO! They can do a movie but only if they stay in time line and cannon. Don't mess us up more!

I know a lot of people find this humorous (many think it'll die somewhere in pre-production) but I think that, if the possibility exists, it would really fuck things up. I cannot keep three canons in my head.

I think I felt this way when they said they wanted to re-make Battlestar Galactica a year after the re-make was finished. *eyeroll*

being lazy here and just copying over what I just said on someone else's lj about this very thing....

I've been watching various alleged reports and comments appear over the last day or so, and the more I read, the more I think Yates is just trying to grab a little publicity.

The BBC's official line is "We can confirm that a Doctor Who feature film remains in development with BBC Worldwide Productions in Los Angeles. However, there is currently no script, cast or production crew in place."

To me that sounds like absolutely nothing is set yet, they likely haven't even got the funding sorted, never mind anything else.

So how he can even attempt to claim anything as regards the direction the film might eventually take, assuming it even gets made....well to say I'm suspicious is an understatement.

Add to that the fact that many movie projects go through a number of directors, and scripts, before any actual work even starts.....yeah, not holding my breath in any way at this stage.
