Milk

My friends and I went to the movies and saw The Uninvited. Then we snuck into Milk, the movie based on Harvey Milk with Sean Penn. Its nominated for 8 Academy Awards.

Honestly, I wished I hadn't spent my money on The Uninvited. I had no idea it was an American butchering remake of A Tale of Two Sisters until the very end when the main character and her sister were both wearing white dresses.

I'm sick of American movies butchering good, Asian horror-films. I wanted to see A Tale of Two Sisters, I had heard all about it, and now its already ruined for me because The Uninvited told me what happens.

Waste of money.

What I should've spent my money on was Milk.

God, that was a good movie. And what an inspirational person.

I mean, this was a guy who didn't even have any history in politics. In fact, he was a hippie! All he knew was that he wanted equality and that's what he fought for.

The difference between this biopic amongst other biopics is that it doesn't spray teargas on your face. In fact, though the entire movie is inspiring, you really don't start to feel the emotions coming in until the end... which I felt was only appropriate. I mean, this way of storytelling didn't make Harvey Milk's life a sob-story... it made his life celebrated, even at the end, and that's what I loved about it. It was also brutally honest (and rightly so!) about the killings of gays in the Castro during the 1970's (police would beat up gays just because they were gay) and how Christian leaders became involved with Proposition 6.

I wouldn't, however, recommend it for anyone who wasn't fervent about gay equal rights, or anyone who has no interest in politics at all, because that's really the movie's focus. The entire movie follows Harvey Milk's life in politics. You don't see his childhood, or how he was as a teen, it starts right at the beginning of his first relationship he had when he started politics and how he got into politics and how he succeeded.

The entire movie was pretty inspirational and I'm glad it was nominated for so many Academy Awards. It was only right.

Most of all, I found this movie to be important today because equal rights is still something we're fighting over. I'm sure we all heard about Proposition 8. Well, if that interests you, go watch Milk and learn about Proposition 6.

I'm glad we have more important gay movies coming out (Milk and Brokeback Mountain). And although I found Harvey Milk's life an inspiration, in the end, he didn't exactly have a happy ending... neither did Brokeback Mountain, for that matter. I just think it's a shame that we still haven't had any major motion pictures where gays had a happy ending. All I can think of is Maurice.

P.S. An Asian movie I'm really obsessed with right now: the South Korean film "Oldboy". Go check it out before it's remade. And yes, there's a chance it will be remade with Will Smith. Will Smith, I love ya, but stay away from the Asian films!!!
