Blah blah spoilers blah.

My thoughts and opinions on episodes 37 and 38! Oh no!!

So, in episode 37, the Zangyack emperor Ackdos Gil sends his son, Oiles (or maybe it's Warz? Pick a name, Toei) Gil a present. It's the Empire's ultimate weapon, Great Oiles: For all intents and purposes, it is a Gundam. A Gundam with Oiles' face on the chest and a shit-ton of godmod lasers. All of the lasers.

Meanwhile, Gai accidentally causes Marvelous to flash back to his own personal Space Nam by asking him what it means "to protect".

You see, Marvelous wasn't always a Gokaiger. He used to belong to the Red Pirates as a crew member under his captain, AkaRed (their cook was Basco ta Jolokia, but he is not important in this particular wordsplooge). Anyway! Due to happenings, the Red Pirates ... well they did not amicably split, let's say. They were actually sold out to the Zangyack, who wanted them all dead -- and AkaRed did in fact die in the explosion of fighting that broke out. He died saving Marvelous, shoving him out of the way of a death blow, giving him the Galleon, and running into the fire and his own grave just to see his protégé live.

Marvelous shrugs Gai off, having relived this worst moment of his life yet again. It's actually Joe who has to explain to Gai that Marvelous doesn't take the concept of "protection" lightly because of the sacrifice that AkaRed made for him. That is not a word he uses, because it means too much.

If you can see where this is going?

The pirates are attacked by Oiles. It's not good. Nothing they do is working against Oiles, and it's becoming increasingly obvious that this is the killing blow, the end.

Marvelous tells everyone to eject, and says that he will go down with the ship. The crew flips the fuck out, but he just yells "Captain's orders!" and waits for them to get the fuck out of dodge. They continue flipping out, and Joe screams at him for only ever asserting his authority right then. Marvelous may be captain, but he's never pulled rank before; there is just a mutual trust between them all so he doesn't have to. But ...

... When no one leaves the cabin, Marvelous slams the eject buttons for their seats. They all go flying out of the ship before the final surge from Oiles flings Marvelous and the ship off into a crackling heap far off in the woods. 37 ends with a shot of him lying completely motionless in the dark hull, filling with smoke.

When next we see Marvelous, he is being yelled at by AkaRed to wake up.

AkaRed: Marvelous. Marvelous.
Marvelous: Huh? -- AkaRed? Am I dead? Where are the others?!
AkaRed: They're fine. The other five are alive.
Marvelous: ... I see. Thank goodness.

AkaRed then goes on to yell at him for protecting the others the way he did ("[It was] just like you would have [done]!" "You're not me!") and eventually he asks Marvelous if he shouldn't have protected their bond instead, because none of the crew wanted him to die for them. Marvelous agrees, and they part.

After this short visit, Marvelous comes to on the ship with Navi, resident robotic parrot, whapping against his chest, begging him to wake up and not be dead. He just laughs it off and goes back to the fight, and finding everyone else. They all yell at him, and he apologizes in his own dickish way. It's just ... him being Marvelous.

... But what are we to make of AkaRed's visit, and the ensuing dialogue?

I believe he died. If not, he was only hanging on by a thread. Marvelous -- he had no qualms about dying for his crew, so he didn't hold back or fight it. But because AkaRed came to him and intervened, and because he got that intervention, he turned around and went back. He was ready to die! But his dream pulled him back, and his crew brought him back to life. If AkaRed had not come, I don't believe he would have returned without a struggle. It had to be his captain, telling him to be less stupid and be himself and not live in his shadow.

He died for them, so he came back for them. For their dreams and to see them lived out. Not to save anyone or help anyone, he is no Jesus-type. He's doing this to see the end of their dreams, and his is all about treasure.

And unless Toei josses the fuck out of me, that's my story and I am sticking to it.
