I suddenly have a deeper respect for Joaquin Phoenix

It appears that Joaquin Phoenix (known most recently for his depiction of Johnny Cash) is also a big Elliott Smith fan. I was reading an article in some pop magazine where celebrities were giving their favorite albums of 2005, and Joaquin cited "From a Basement on the Hill" as his, noting that he can't stop listening to it over & over. Yeah,it's a really good flick...he actually plays all the music himself without being dubbed at all...which is impressive for him because he never touched a guitar before he took on the role.

Yesterday I heard Johnny Cash's version of NIN's "Hurt" while I was working out at my apartment's fitness center, of all places... It was pretty bizarre. Somebody had a TV on. It made me think back to the first time I heard that song. When he came out with that song, I have to say, at first I thought, why is an old guy playing NIN? Then I thought, WOW, how awesome is he for doing that. So many elder folk can't get past the fact that the younger generations are too different from them (hell, I'm 20 and I'm becoming that way, I feel like my musical era has passed and I'm just grabbing on to straws trying to scrounge up any current music that means anything), that some of our music (in the 90's at least) was too raw and gut-wrenching, but here was this 70-something year old guy playing Nine Inch Fucking Nails, shortly before ending up on his death bed. Blows my mind ( ... )
