Well, Hello There!

Hi! How are you?

I was watching the movie Sleepers again and lamenting the lack of fic. That's an h/c film that ends before the /c, and of course comfort is hard to write but wonderful to read. I of course usually want to cross the movie's protags with other characters, but this time I kept thinking of Michael and Shakes, wanting them to face what happened and work to be able to plow through it and out to the other side. Those poor fucking boys. John and Tommy, yeah, that sucks, that potential never realized, evaporated, but Sleepers is Shakes's story, and Michael is his best friend, so they're the two I focus on. And poor Carol just needs to distance herself from them, human black holes that they are. Good luck, beautiful woman. What a rock.

Anyway, if you haven't seen Sleepers and your're reading this and you've maybe (probably) read my stuff, I encourage you to check out the movie. It'd be right up your alley.

Life is, uh, hectic? I schedule breaks throughout the day. I wake up at 3:30 and go to work at Target until 11, at which point I head over to the campus for my office hours. No student has ever stopped in, so that gives me time to do my own homework for the classes I'm taking for my master's. Currently applying to post-grad programs (MFAs & Ph.D.s), and I've finished four of the seven or eight applications, so that'll be a relief when I'm soon done. Even if I don't get accepted anywhere, just the process has woken me up, made me more aware of how and what I write in terms of original fiction. I'm getting into writing poetry, too, doing workshops here at the university, so that's something I plan to continue. I teach three courses, all intro/beginning academic writing, which isn't the most exciting area in lit studies but certainly helps pay the bills and looks mighty fine on my cv. I usually come back to my shitty apartment around 6 or 7, where I eat some cereal and go read fic for 30 minutes before falling asleep at a ridiculous 8 or 9 o'clock. I'm looking forward to Thanksgiving. Managed to swing two days off from everything, including lesson plans and homework, so I'm driving 3 1/2 hours west to my folks'. Good food and their huge fucking TV (60"), which my sis J and I went halvsies on for their anniversary this past summer.

In terms of family, my sis is finally escaping this shitty state. She's heading to Port Angeles, WA right after Christmas. I am so happy for her because this is not a good place to be trans, queer, and liberal, and she needs to be happy. Bonus: if I don't get accepted to any post-grads, I am totally planning on following her out there. (I need to leave, too. I can't stand living in this super conservative, bigoted state anymore.)

Sadly, my brother hit rock bottom back in May and then proceeded to roll around down there. He's a felon now, homeless, with a broken ankle and a significant drug and alcohol problem. He's also managed to alienate every single person who ever loved him, except one. I haven't seen or spoken to C in a year and a half. All I hear is second or third-hand, and the word "trainwreck" comes to mind. I remember the cool, goofy guy I used to love and respect, and I mourn. I don't know the stranger he's become, and I don't want to know him; I just miss my brother. But we in the fam refuse to be dragged down with him. C & J haven't spoken in probably 12 years. I feel terrible for my folks. C's all but bankrupted them. My mom told me point-blank, "You and J's inheritance, as well as all the money we had in savings, is gone." They tried and tried and tried to keep C afloat, paying all his bills out there in Denver for 2 years while he couldn't hold down a job, and it just became too much.

I'm still in the angry grieving stage. This is the third person close to me who's become an alcoholic, plus bonus points for drug addiction!

Well, that got super depressing. I was texting J today, saying how whenever I'm feeling especially down--I just remember Smallville, how silly and poignant it was, how delightful TW and MR and ED and AM were, how deliciously evil was, all of it. Remember the episode where Clark meets Santa? And saves him from drunkenly committing suicide? Show!

Anyway, wow, if you're still reading this. Turned out waaaaay longer than I intended. Really, how are you? I miss you! I miss lj and spare time and writing fic! Oy!
