Hastert said he huddled with his staff members last week and he believes they acted appropriately in handling information on Foley's conduct. But he also issued them a stern warning: "If they did cover something up, then they should not continue to have their jobs."

Foley has long ago (1.5 weeks???) been lost as the core issue.

It is now about
Who Knew,
When did they Know
What Did they do with what they Knew.

800 years and politicals still havent' learned.

You don't get burned by doing wrong, you get burned by covering it.

Look at Oral Roberts (IIRC) who got caught with the hooker. Up in front of the congregation, crying and begging forgiveness, and the whole thing is a blip in his history.

One of the reasons this has blown up into the issue it has (other than the dog-eat-dog world of national politics lately, and the morality cop attitude that has evolved from that), is that it was a consistent pattern of behaviour. Most earlier Washington sex scandals involved the politician making a fool of himself with a single individual. Here, Foley has been playing grab-ass for over 10 years with (sorry, I can't help myself) gay abandon; I haven't tried to count, but I'm pretty sure we're well over 10 former pages who have reported they personally experienced or observed wrongful behaviour.

Oh, well. Bread and circuses. At least I've got popcorn.
