Huh. The things you find on Webster

The latin word "sapiens" (As in Homo Sapiens Sapiens) is the participle form of sapere, which is the present infinitive form of the verb sapiō:

1. I taste of, smack of, have a flavor of.
2. I have good taste or discernment.
3. (figuratively) I am wise or sensible, discern.
