Fanmix: "This Town and I" (Jellicoe Road)

Apr 24, 2012 22:00

You could call this my ~serenade to Melina Marchetta's novel, On the Jellicoe Road. It started out as a character-by-character playlist, but then I thought, hey: why not let their whole entwined story play out in all the songs?

Cue me wasting a whole afternoon on a giant five-parter fanmix.

(...I think I may like the cover best of all.)

1)I can’t imagine you not loving it! It’s got grace between enemies and potent friendships and the importance of history and juuust a touch of otherworldliness. You know friendship is like my bulletproof kink, and I thought I’d seen it all, but this book kept showing me different specimens of friendship: what happens when you’re too tight and would collapse without every person there? How do you learn to breath without each other for a while? What about a friendship where two people are more comfortable pretending to hate each other? What about analyzing each other via karaoke song choices? Just. Gah. So unexpected and so goodUm also, you WILL cry ( ... )

2. I can't wait to check it out tonight when I get home.

3. something that gives me *sdlgladha gross sobbing* feelings too

so accurate.

4. AHA. I see it now! I coudln't figure out who the people where, but now I see Ted and Robin. I feel the same way about my T7S theme. I think about changing it, but then Red is spraying whipped cream on his head! And I can't.

Hello!
Jellicoe Road is one of my favorite books of all time. I think you did a great job with this. The only thing I would add is The Whole of the Moon by The Waterboys. Well, and maybe Kenny Rogers, but I don't actually like him, haha.

Hi!

Thank you; I’m really happy you like it! And yeah: when I was done with Jellicoe, I immediately went back to reread …and promptly felt my eyes well up when the boy in the tree reappears. It’s just that kind of book.

I thought about adding Coward of the County, since Taylor sort of adopts it, but then it didn’t click with the rest. Plus, Taylor HAD to get a fierce lady anthem. ; )

Thanks for the song rec! I’d never heard of it before; it’s great. And now I know that Jude and Webb’s rain dirty valley/Brigadoon line came from a song.

This is such a belated comment, but I wanted to say thank you for making this and putting so much thought into it. I just did a Jellicoe Road reread (third time this year, no I do not have a problem, what are you talking about?) and remembered reblogging this on Tumblr, so I decided to finally give it a listen, and dang, SO GOOD. Excuse me while I bawl about your song choices - "Hometown Glory" for Hannah? AUGH SO GOOD - and just generally fangirl you for putting this together.

(I’m so sorry for this UBER late reply- I’ve been on LJ-hiatus!) redsilverchains February 28 2013, 14:15:11 UTC

You’re so welcome! This book deserves ALL the fangirling and fanworks. And oh man, you can NEVER read this book enough times-I’ve also read it thrice in a year, each time from the point of view of a character or a pairing (Raffaela reread, Jude and Narnie reread…yeah, I have a problem too. :p) and it never lost its power. I’m extremely glad this playlist gave you so much joy!
