Somewhere in the middle of Oregan, they come upon an honest-to-god traveling circus and fair.

The minute his eyes fall on the colorfully decorated open field, Jared lets out a burst of child-like laughter so warm that Jensen can't help but feel his heart skip a little. Smiling over at his boyfriend, he cocks up an eyebrow in question.

“You wanna go?”

“Hell YES!” Jared beats his hand against the top frame of the windshield of the convertible, nearly jumping in his seat and setting the car bouncing just a little as Jensen veers off the main road into the dirt path leading up to the cordoned-off parking lot.

Being the gentleman he is, Jensen pays for their admission and enough tickets to keep Jared as happy as a kid with the latest guitar hero. Contrary to how he plays it out at conventions, interviews and behind-the-scenes DVD features, Jensen loves how free-spirited and young-at-heart Jared is. When Jared is happy, it's as if a bright light gets turned on over him and everyone surrounding him. Infectious is putting it mildly.

Not giving a care to who sees, they hold hands as they reach the beginning of all the activities and before he can even say a word, Jensen feels his arm getting pulled towards the Tilt-a-Whirl, Jared laughing as he realizes he's nearly dragging his boyfriend across the dried grass.

“You're such a little kid.” Jensen muses with a faint smile, rubbing his shoulder as they wait in line, Jared's arms wrapped loosely around his waist.

“Yeah, but who else is gonna keep you on your toes, old man?” Jared grins, pressing a tender kiss to Jensen's temple, both of them wearing hats and sunglasses against the bright midday sun.

Jensen nestles in, feeling anonymous enough to let his guard down and just be a couple in public. He shuffles along with Jared as the line inches forward, eyes half-closed as the warmth and affection he feels radiates through every last vein.

They only let go once they're at the gate, and even then it's brief, Jared throwing an arm over Jensen's shoulders once they're strapped into the little half-mushroom-shaped ride.

“When's the last time you were on one of these things?” Jared asks as the ride's breaks release and it slowly begins to move.

“I think I was eight, dude. Seriously.” Jensen can't help but laugh, one hand reaching out to steady himself as the ride picks up speed.

“Well, consider this your official comeback to carnival rides.” Jared grins, his eyes closed in the shade of the ride's cover, his smile bright and beautiful as they begin spinning and spinning and spinning.

----------------------------

“Oh my god! This is the greatest thing ever invented!” Jensen crows as he has another spoonful of the ice-cold treat Jared had just finished buying him. They've done the Slingshot already and as repayment for making Jensen scream like a fucking girl, Jared bought him a cup of candy-colored Dippin' Dots; He wishes he'd thought to do it months ago, because Jensen's reaction is pretty priceless. Snapping a picture of his boyfriend's awed expression, Jared barely has time to save it before he's cracking up at the look of almost-orgasmic bliss that Jensen's got on his face.

“Dude, they aren't new. It's astronaut stuff. Where have you been?” Jared manages between his bouts of laughter, his amusement only increasing when Jensen thwacks him on the back of the head with his ball cap.

“Just 'cause I'm not a sugar-guzzling machine like you, doesn't mean you get to laugh.” Even as he says it, he's grinning and offering up a spoonful of the stuff to his other half. Jared returns the favor, having picked a different flavor of the ice cream.

“You love meeee!” Jared says in a sing-song voice after swallowing, looking absolutely pleased with himself and not expecting the cold lips that fuse with the skin of his neck. His little jolt and shuffle away makes Jensen laugh out loud and Jared's grin grows exponentially as he watches the older man's face light up.

“I do. I really do.” Jensen finally manages to reply once he's come down off his high of amusement, his free hand reaching out to thread through Jared's, eyes catching sight of the one thing he's yet to do at the carnival. Jared's takes in a sharp little breath and Jensen can see the effect his words have, clear as day.

They finish the ice cream after only a few minutes, and this time, it's Jensen dragging Jared towards a booth. Grinning ear to ear, he can only chuckle when Jared realizes what he's going to do.

“Pick one.” Jensen forewarns as he hands over some tickets and picks up the modified rifle, tucking it into position with ease and getting ready to aim at the row swans swimming behind the plywood waves.

“I want...that one.” Jared points to the top row of stuffed animals, knowing that Jensen is a very good shot, despite only shooting real ammunition twice a year on a gun range in either California or Texas.

Jensen nods and closes his weaker eye, waiting for the carnival worker to pull the switch to start the machine. One by one, the metal targets of the birds get hit, the carni's eyes going wide in amazement. After he's hit all the targets, Jensen points at the big, blue stuffed bear in the top and waits with a self-satisfied grin as the carni has no choice but to pull it down and hand it over.

“Damn hot shot..” The guy mutters under his breath, looking especially peeved when Jensen hands the bear over to Jared who gives it a big squeeze.

----------------------------

“So, was it everything you wanted?” Jensen grins as he loops an arm over Jared's shoulders, eyes watching the night sky as fireworks light up the darkness.

“More.” Jared replies with fondness, his face turning only slightly so he can look into the green eyes so bright under the multicolored explosions in the sky.

“Oh yeah? How's that?” Jensen cocks his head, a look of curiosity sweeping over him.

“I got to do it all with you.” He whispers, leaning in and kissing Jensen softly on the mouth, one hand cupping his cheek while the other tickled the very nape of his neck.

“Well if that don't make me feel like the best boyfriend ever...” Jensen chuckles, moving closer and letting his arm fall back so that Jared can take the position, his head leaning against his boyfriend's solid chest.

The Ferris wheel has been going around for what seems like hours, giving them a full view of the carnival and the small crowd that's still enjoying every last second of it. Jensen presses a kiss right over Jared's heart, more than glad he made the stop.

“So where are we sleeping tonight?” He asks Jared, looking up with nothing but a smile on his face.

“I hear the bearded lady's got a thing for you. I'm sure she can rustle us up a cot or two.” And right then, the teddy goes flying at Jared's head.

They're still laughing when they get back to the car.
