Miraculously everyone's shows.
Every last person they sent an invitation to is now sitting at the reception, waiting for the newly-weds to be officially announced.
“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, will you all please give a warm round of applause to the new Mr. and Mr. Ackles-Padalecki!”
Jensen gives Jared's hand a tight squeeze, and almost instantly, Jared leans down to give his new husband a quick peck.
“I love you.” He whispers against his lips.
“Love you too.” Jensen replies as he starts leading them out into the big, open lodge to the awaiting crowd of family and friends.
They give more high-fives than they have since their days of playing high school basketball and neither can keep the smiles off their faces as they make their way to their table, set at the front of the room and on a riser so that they can see everyone and everyone can see them.
The food is hearty; Meant to warm up their guests who've braved the winter weather in thin dresses, strappy heels and suit jackets that don't do much against the chilled breeze outside.
First out of the kitchen is a
roasted garlic and tomato soup with grilled cheese croutons. Jensen chuckles softly as he gazes from where Jared is thoroughly enjoying the soup to the tables closest to them, where everyone seems to be discussing how 'them' the menu is.
“This is incredible! So warm and sweet, with just the right touch of spice. So like the boys.” Jared grandmother says, looking awed that the meal felt so personal and familiar.
“So something they'd make on the weekend.” Mackenzie agrees, taking another spoonful with gusto.
His eyes move back to Jared and they catch each others eyes, sharing their feelings without saying a word. There's no surprise when both the wedding photographer and Megan capture the moment on film, causing Jared to break into one of his well-known laughs that seems to create even more warmth in the already packed room.
The next courses are the mains, with something for everyone that's been invited.
A green curry with roasted vegetables inside a roasted pumpkin for the vegetarians; Mahi with tomato and tarragon sitting on roasted fennel for the fish lovers;
Red wine-brazed chicken with potatoes and veggies for those that don't eat red meat and for those that like a little blood on their plate, a
NY strip with polenta-stuffed Poblanos and Mole.
Jared is the one that laughs as he hears the various noises of approval their wedding guests make as they take in their plates.
“We did good.” He comments to Jensen, moving his hand towards his husband for a fist bump.
“We did good.” Jensen affirms, nodding and smirking in triumph.
Once everyone has pleasantly full stomach and is back to discussing the event and the two grooms, the DJ announced that it's time for the first dance.
They both stand, Jensen giving Jared a quick check to make sure he doesn't have food on him while Jared does the same, before filing out from behind the table and out into the middle of the floor, surrounded on all sides by tables and chairs.
Notes begin to slowly swell over the hush talk of the crowd as the two reach the middle, hand in hand, eyes on no one but each other. The song has been 'their' song, ever since Cathy in makeup played it for them one morning and told them just how well it fit the two of them.
We’ve come a long, long way
I must say
We’ve come a long, long way
Love takes time and time is on our side
Time is on our side
Jared can feel his eyes begin to sting as the singer starts in on the first verse, the music airy and beautiful as he slips both arms around Jensen's waist and pulls him close, taking his husband's right hand into his left and holding it over his heart. Jensen falls right into step with him, one big warm hand splayed against his shoulder blades while the other gives Jared's fingers a loving squeeze.
I was all alone and I didn’t have a place
You came into my life and then everything changed
Love this strong never fades
Holds onto your life doesn’t go away
The lines cause Jared's breath to catch in his throat and he looks down at his husband with a wet smile, gratitude and absolute devotion clear in his green eyes before they close against the tears that-in his mind, at least-threaten to ruin the moment. Jensen gets it, doesn't even need to ask, and shares that same smile as the hand on his back gently moves to cup his face, thumb slipping under his lashes to catch the tears that have fallen slowly.
“We made it, babe.” Jensen whispers, his voice a comfort and a treasure to Jared who's too overwhelmed by love to say anything, instead choosing to bury his wet face in the crook of Jensen's neck and chuckle a little in embarrassment.
“It's okay.” Jensen adds, his own smile beaming, eyes shimmering as he realizes that had things worked out differently-even by a few seconds-he would be at this wedding, crying for a very different reason as he watched Jared marry Sandy or some other person that would never, he was sure, love him as completely as Jensen could.
“I love you so much. Thank you for loving me.” Jared whispers and Jensen can tell that the emotions of the entire day are finally coming out full force; His husband's been trying to play it cool since they got up that morning and now Jensen can't help fall even more in love with him at just how earnest and raw and beautiful his emotions are.
His own cheeks are wet as he nuzzles against Jared's cheek, soothing him softly with pursed lips and gentle squeezes of his hand. Jensen knows he couldn't love someone more if he tried.
“Thank you for giving me my happily ever after.” He's not surprised when he finds his own voice shaking, his own emotions as deep and visible as Jared's.
The second verse kicks in, the singer's voice swelling as the emotion in the song goes up a notch or two. They sway back and forth, oblivious to the fact that nearly everyone watching them is now crying by proxy, too caught up in the picturesque image to care about trivial things like wiping their eyes. Jensen kisses Jared's temple tenderly, the action causing his husband to lift his head and kiss him back sweetly on the lips.
Holding each other, the rest of the room dissolves along with the evening's light, no one even visible to Jared but his husband. He's never imagined it could be like this, but here it is, and it's better than he could have ever asked for.
From somewhere on his shoulder, Jared sniffles and then clears his throat softly, standing back up to his full height and grinning sheepishly at Jensen, both of them bursting out laughing when they give each other the same puppy dog looks.
Intimate whispers pass between them as they dance, the conversation keeping them from looking around and realizing that they're not dancing alone in their living room, but in a room full of people. They talk about the present and most importantly, the future, both deciding that they want to get started on a family sooner rather than later. They agree on a medium-sized brood, and agree that Vancouver is the place to raise them, safe from Hollywood's sometimes-harsh glare.
Laughter bubbles up between them as they remind each other of some of their friends' more questionable fashion choices for the event and at one point Jared lets out his beautiful laugh, when Jensen mentions that his maternal aunt looks like a Smurf on LSD with her printed dress, big hair, and eighties makeup.
As though it's only meant to be listened to for that one perfect moment, the song ends and fades into something equally mellow lyrically, but a little more upbeat in its beat. The rest of the party gets up, and soon enough the floor is packed with their friends and family, everyone either partnering off or dancing in groups.
Jensen stays snug against Jared as the two just breathe and enjoy the moment in silence, knowing that this is it. This is forever. This is good.
