Kudos to you for taking your life in your hands everyday with the commute. Even on my short drive to and from work, I encounter lots of bicyclists on the residential roads. I'm very, very cautious, because bicyclists DO NOT use the road the same way autos do. I certainly don't want to hurt anyone.
And don't ask why I don't bike the 2km to work. ;-)
If I don't see postings from you for a while, I'm assume someone nailed you on the bike ride! :(
That is true, cyclists do use the road a bit differently, and yes there are bad cyclists as well, but cyclists and drivers both need to follow the rules of the road, share the road and be careful.
Glad you're safe. Portland is known for being a bicycling city. There are A LOT of bicyclists here.
When we lived in the Bay Area Marty's mode of transportaion was a motorcycle. As cautious as he is, and as bright as his biking leathers were, he would still get cut off, or in an accident by someone making an illegal left turn in front of him. Fortunately, even with the accidents, he was never hurt.
With at said, because of Marty and his motorcycle, I became very aware of motorcyclists as well as bicyclists. Even here in Portland, I try to be VERY aware of bikers, however there is a time or two when I still don't see a bicyclist and cut in front of them. Scares me to no end. So yes, get all of the lights you need. In fact be sure to mount to your helmet an aviation light, a lighthouse light as well as the kind of lights used for premieres! Be as visible as you can.
