also, did i hallucinate the black characters in vampires of venice or something? mels is not the first. moff made some fucking mistakes in this episode but i can't see how mels is one of them.

well i suppose this illustrates that five minutes of an episode miiiiight not be enough time to make a judgement on it. i mean i waited until the very end of "the end of time" before i was willing to think it might be unmitigated shit! (and that not only had the "let's marry off the two black people" but also the bit with the spiky aliens telling ten that referring to them as a cactus was "racist", in a way that was supposed to make us laugh at THEM and the whole idea of people being offended by racist jokes!)

actually you know, i think i was convinced within the first five minutes of the pirate episode that it was going to be awful. but then it really was.

Also, it looked (in those few minutes) like Mels was going to be a new cast member, not a single-episode character, like those you mention.
