I read this in the Globe. I hated it. It's appalling to me that someone has to come up with the philosophy of a "Great Filter" to explain why we haven't seen evidence of other intelligent life in the universe, when the simple explanation is that the universe is damn big. If it turns out that a faster-than-lightspeed drive is, indeed, impossible, then even extremely advanced civilizations may never advance more than a few dozen light years from their origin. Or maybe expansion beyond their own system just isn't something in which they're interested. Or maybe they communicate with rays of colored light instead of radio waves. Or maybe they manipulate pulsars. What we haven't found is evidence of intelligent life that communicates in a way we could pick up within an area we can monitor. That leaves a lot of room for other explanations than a "Great Filter."

A friend noticed I'm in capable of replying to someone, instead i occationally reply to myself like i did with this:

Oh, I completely agree. The likelihood we would have other intelligent life in our galaxy is pretty small since they've probably have to be on the outer ring like we are. In order for us to be getting regular light transmissions [radio and what not] theyd have to have developed it x amount of years earlier than this where x is the number of light years away they are.

There are so many reasons for us not to be seeing other intelligences that it is staggering. Personally I hope they find big [dinosaur big] type fossils over there. But then who knows, maybe life is quite common out there we just happen to be the first to be this evolved. Maybe theyll start spring up all over the place. I dunno. Im glad people are thinking about it though. Im glad he isnt one of those idiots screaming that we are wasting money on a space program. Im screaming but its because we arent spending enough of our money doing it.
