I suppose our captors believe they have quite the sense of humor, what with these miserable costumes.

Hmph. I refuse to allow them the satisfaction of spoiling my birthday.

Well, I'm sure it could've been worse . . . Oh, your birthday is sometime this week?

It could have been, yes. But that would be rather unlikely.

My birthday is this coming Sunday, the 31st. You ought to commit it to memory.

I suppose it depends on the person.

This Sunday . . . I'll remember it. [ A pause. ] I am Alf. May I have a name to go with the date?

Of course. I am Rachel Alucard.

It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Rachel.

Please pardon my direct approach. Is there anything you would possibly like for your birthday? There isn't much I can offer in a place like Luceti, but . . .

My, it is refreshing to meet an individual in the possession of genuine manners and tact.

No gift is necessary, though I do enjoy tea.

[ Huh. ] Is it . . . ?

I'll prepare some for you, then. It's the least I can do.

It most certainly is, particularly here. This village is full of boors and ingrates.

How thoughtful of you.

Surely they're not always like that. I've met quite a few wonderfully mannered people.

Do you have a preferred flavor, or should I choose?

Those with class are few and decidedly far between.

Any should be fine, as long as it is not green tea or oolong. I find those revolting.

That's . . . quite unfortunate.

I'll keep that in mind. Thank you for taking the time to tell me.

Yes, it is. Though I suspect it is to be expected in a place like this.

It was no trouble.
