CHARACTER:
Name: Kunogi Himawari
Source: xxxholic (Manga, Chapter 175-185)
History: The term born under a bad sign should really have been placed on the baby Himawari so long ago. She seems, for no reason at all, to be 'blessed' with really bad luck. Something that only her mother, father and now Doumeki and Tanpopo seem to be unaffected by. Because of her ridiculous bad luck, things have happened to people around her all over. People she is connected to end up hurt in mysterious or simple ways just by knowing her. The people next door, after she picked up a ball from their yard, experienced a massive fire of their home. And even after her grandmother took her to a priest at a young age, to be checked, even after being told it's an incurable case of bad luck, the old woman passed on. Himawari knows that she was old and ill, but still it seems to fall under her curse of bad luck none the less.
While attending Cross Private School she tried very hard to keep away from people. But this one adorable bespectacled young man kept wiggling his way in and befriending her. There were others too, girls of her class and the archer as well, but she always tried her best to stay distant. Because of this distance she might have come off as standoffish or even snobbish to some people, though she was very friendly. Through the fact that Doumeki-kun does not seem to be affected by her bad luck, she has been able to become 'friends' with Watanuki. Always inviting or being invited to do things with the boy, she makes sure that Doumeki will be around as well, to keep Watanuki-kun safe. Nine times out of ten though she leaves the boys to go about something alone.
She's gotten better about that though. After the incident with Watanuki-kun’s fall she helped pay the price of his recovery, though she asked that her payment was held secret. Only Yuuko, Doumeki and Mokona know that as payment for her wish to help Watanuki she took the scars from his fall. She'd rather keep it that way too.
With a gift of Tanpopo from Watanuki she has gained one more being that is immune to her bad luck, meaning that she isn't so alone anymore. It's been very nice to have the little golden bird as a companion always nested there at her side. As of late she has grown more accustomed to having a few friends and likes to keep in contact with them. Still careful about these things, she will be friendly to your face, but in her heart attempt to be distant from everyone. She will speak kindly and be out going, but still never really grow close to people. It's just set in her history like that.
Personality: Himawari is a cheerful girl with a pleasant attitude which she often cheers her friends on strongly with. She seems to always be smiling, always curious of her friends and what they are doing, and generally a chipper happy young girl. On the outside, to strangers, Himawari seems to have a good and happy life for her to be smiling that well. In reality, her life has been full of bad luck for most everyone around her but a select few. It’s not a curse or anything but simply how she is. Her mother and father as well as Doumeki and her pet bird Tanpopo are so far the only people immune to her bad luck, making for a fairly lonely life. None the less she smiles.
It’s been said that the price to take her bad luck away from her and release her of this burden is far too high and would leave her with no happiness at all. She’s lived her life as a no luck girl, a barer of bad fortune to anyone she connected to, for so long, that she learned to manage and work with it and accept being alone. Smiling is how she faces the world because otherwise it might be too sad and she could never keep on moving. Smiling and being cheerful is the smart thing to do.
When confronted with something dangerous, Himawari isn’t the type to scream and run, nor is she the type to waver or cry or do anything too overly impulsive. Weird things have happened to her through out her life so she’s well adjusted to odd things that might happen. Nothing is overly shocking, though this isn’t to say she can’t be shocked, surprised or scared. She can, but she isn’t the type to run crying from trouble. Danger has to be handled properly or someone could be hurt.
On people she tends to be a bit standoffish and yet… not. To explain, she tries not to make too many connections with people because she doesn’t want those people to be hurt over her bad luck. She talks and is friendly to people, but she tries not to get close. In example to her series, Watanuki clearly has a hard crush on her, and she seems to be obvious to this. In reality she knows he has a crush and finds it flattering, but she refuses to let herself acknowledge this for fear that it might hurt the boy. When one day Watanuki fell from a window after she touched his shoulder, she took the blame in on herself for having given him bad luck. Considering him such a very good and close friend, she spoke to him, after paying a part of the price to keep him alive (scars all across the back of her body) and told him what she was. A simple human who brings bad luck to anyone she makes connections with. She said good bye, still smiling the entire time and planned to leave, so he wouldn’t be harmed again.
She’s very good at sacrificing things she wants or loves so not to hurt others. Prevention, too, is something she is skilled at. As in doing things that will prevent making too big of a connection so as not to hurt others. She tries though, to make friends with others but she tends to keep her distance even then. On occasions, Watanuki has asked to walk Himawari home, just to spend time with her but a majority of the time she always invites Doumeki along with them, claiming that the boys are such good friends and have such a grand ‘comedy act’ but really she worries about something happening to the young man if she's alone with him.
Biggest Fear: Himawari's biggest fear is causing others bad luck. It's something she strives very hard to control and to keep under her control. She activally works to keep her bad luck from rubbing off onto others. To see someone she cares about deeply being hurt or killed by her bad luck is one of her deepest fears. As for a physical fear, she has a grand dislike and fear of snakes. As simple as that and for no big reason other then they are icky; snakes will make her freeze in place or panic.
Powers: Himawari really has no super human abilities or anything fantastic to list. She can’t fly or leap buildings and really isn’t even a fighter at all, but her bad luck could be considered an ability. She tends to have a life long case of Bad Luck that affects those she makes connections to. So far only four beings have been unaffected by her Bad Luck. That would be her mother, father, Doumeki, and her pet bird, Tanpopo that her good friend Watanuki hatched specially for her.
She has never taken any martial arts courses or anything like that for fear of harming someone unfairly in competition or training, though, while she couldn’t do that so well, she’s a good runner on the track and in good physical condition. She’s fairly good with traditional dance styles as well though she’s not practices in ages. She’s rather smart though she appears and plays a ditz fairly well; she’s just not as dimwitted as she might appear. Problem solving can at times be simple but she tends to help by dropping hints and letting others solve the issues while she cheers them on from the side lines.
SAMPLES:
Third Person: There were quite a few things that keyed her into her situation at had. The first being the cinnimin taste so sweet in her mouth was not something she remembered eating before bed, nor did she even remember going to bed. No, last she remembered she had gotten up, washed, brushed her teeth (that can't be where this taste camefrom), dressed in a nice pleated skirt and a tall necked button up shirt and vest. Simple, stylish and comfortable. She had put on a pair of cute shoes and headed out of her home, kissing her mother good day and taking off.
She went to get some juice and sweets to bring with her to the boys that weekend. She had wondered how they were doing and what happened with the woman that Watanuki-kun was trying ot get through to, as well as wondered how those cookies tasted to the both of them. With all that though it made her consern for her current wearabouts appear more drastic in her mind.
Moving her tongue over a small round candy, she decided that this most defnitally wasn't right. With out thinking though she continued to suck on it, as it tasted fairly good. That was when she realized that it was covering the dusty old moldy smell of her surroundings. Not to mention there was a flapping, a tweeting, and a frantic sound of Tanpopo trying to wake her up. With a small gasp her eyes snapped open and she sat up, swiftly.
THis was not her bed. THis was not her room. This was no where that she knew at all! Looking around, her hands reached up to take Tanpopo careful from the air and pet him, trying to calm the little thing down. Her legs curlled up under her, and her arms tightened to her sides. THis was wrong. This was veyr wrong.
Wasn't she walking down a street not too long ago? What time of day was it jsut now? Was it even the same day? And where WAS this? She had no clue, and no one was around either. There would be no answers given through if she jsut sat there. Moving to stand from her bed, she stepped down on a old flooring, crept around the end of hte bed and... tripped over a roll of red tape. COnfused she walked past it, looking around.
A sinking feeling hit her belly like a ton of ice. Had she been kid napped or something? Taken away and locked up in some old delapadated building? She didn't remember being taken or attacked or anything. Oh, but that's silly, isn't it? Then... how did one explain where she was? Why she was here?
"Come on Tanpopo, let's take a look around, but be really quiet..." she told the little quivering bird nesting in her hair, close to her neck. He was jsut as scared as she was, but she wasn't showing it as badly as he did.
First Person: [A journal entery]
I'm... not sure what to say at the moment. This place is very... strange, and most defnitally not some place I know either. The rooms a mess and Tanpopo just wont calm down. I think he's shaking.
I keep hearing weird noises here and there as well. When did I get here? No, actually, HOW did I get here feels more fitting. Candy and red tap and a strange run down apartment building.
It all seems like something out of a bad story. Maybe something the boys would tell me, after one of their great adventures. I don't know why I would be in one of these situations though. It seems all a bit too weird to me.
And what is that sound? It's like it's right outside the front door...
Notes: I am assuming her Bad Luck might work the same here as it would back home. If not, if you could give me some idea on how the mods feel about that, that would be lovely. Will Doumeki's abilities still nullify her bad luck when she's around him?
Also, I would like to know if it would be alright for her to appear with her very small bird, Tanpopo? He's nothing too special, other then he isn't effected by her bad luck, but he's a nice companion and I can see it being used for later horrific plot devices, if it' alright for me to NPC her own Pet that is. He's a special bright yellow bird made just for her.
