Character Number: 1 (unless we're counting dropped characters, in which case Miku would be 2)
Character: Miku Hinasaki
Fandom: Fatal Frame III: The Tormented
Age: 19
Personality: Mafuyu, Mafuyu, Mafuyu.
Her big brother was her most important person. She adored him, and the fact that she was willing to explore a terrifying, dangerous haunted mansion is inarguable proof of that. He could see visions just like she could, and as such he was the only one she could speak with about her experiences. She felt safe in his presence, and knew he would protect her and keep her from harm. Due to the fact that their father was presumably dead and their mother committed suicide, Mafuyu was, in Miku's own words, "her only family." Because of how he took care of her, she's endlessly devoted to him.
Miku is shy, and timid--perhaps even awkward. She feels like an outcast, and was treated like one when she was younger. She had had a hard time keeping friends and could not (and still cannot) open up to anyone easily, due to the discomfort she felt about her powers. Between the visions, the isolation, and her lack of living parents, it's no wonder she wasn't at all comfortable with other people when we see her in the first game--she hadn't gotten the opportunity to feel comfortable with people. Thanks to living with Rei and Yuu, however, she has learned to open up some (or you could see it as circumstances forcing her to be more open), and though she's not quite a social butterfly, she's making slow but steady progress.
Rei describes her as cheerful and hard working, though the cheerfulness may be an act she puts on for their sakes. While she is someone kindhearted and caring, she's still depressed over the fact that Mafuyu stayed with Kirie in Himuro Mansion, and feels guilty that she did not stay with him too. She wishes she could have saved his life somehow, even if dying was his ultimate choice. She's very strong, and managed to last two entire years before the guilt got to be too much to bear and the Manor of Sleep curse caught up to her. By the end of her 'arc' in III, she's overwhelmed with guilt, and is willing to follow visions of her brother forever if it means she gets to see him one more time. Despite her withdrawn nature, she is not a coward. In both games she appears in, she's clearly frightened of the ghosts she sees, but fights on despite it all, probably even less afraid than most would be in her sitatuion. This could be because in both games she's searching for her beloved older brother, which is surely a strong motivator for her to continue pushing forward.
By the time we see her in III, she's tired of living without him in general. The additional loss of Yuu also couldn't have helped matters--Yuu was her brother's best friend and Rei's fiance, after all.
Rei mentions at one point that, upon discovering a photograph of Miku and her brother, that she's never seen Miku look as happy as she does in the photo.
Even still, Miku manages to go out and do research for Rei and keep the house tidy, as Rei herself is too depressed over Yuu's death to have everything run smoothly. Though Miku is near her breaking point, she still manages to be Rei's lifeline. I'd say that this certainly underlines Miku's devotion towards those she's grown close to.
When it comes to people she really and deeply cares for, she can indeed be selfish. For example, she didn't want Mafuyu to stay with Kirie at the end of I, even if it meant Kirie would not have to be alone. She fears losing those she loves because she doesn't have many close friends in the first place, and that is no doubt the root of that selfishness.
History:
Here you go! I'll be taking her post-normal ending.
Abilities: Miku was born with an innate sixth sense. This means, mainly, that she can both see ghosts and see visions of the past, and just...psychic stuff overall. Th visions appear to be activated by simply touching certain objects or walking through certain areas. (Technically she was supposed to have lost her powers by the end of I, but we see in III that with the advent of the Manor of Sleep business, they've returned to her.)
However, her sixth sense does not merely have passive qualities. She can interact with ghosts (and as such be harmed by them should they attack her). While Miku is very adept at avoiding spirit-induced injury, there's only so much she can do if she's attacked by something supernatural.
Unless, of course, she has a Camera Obscura. Over the course of the series, she's had two separate cameras. The one in the first game (which is not even called a Camera Obscura, though it is one--the term didn't exist until the second game came along), was destroyed because the shiny magical mirror piece inside of it was required by the plot. As for the second one, Miku obtains it in the Manor of Sleep, and though we never see her with it outside of the dream, the dream-world and everything in it are just as real as anything in the waking world. Thus, Miku will be bringing the Camera Obscura plus some exorcising film with her.
Now, as for what the camera does. Like the part above about the film implies, it exorcises ghosts. Sort of. Actually exorcising a ghost is a difficult task, but at the very least the camera can fend the spirits off, and damage them to the point that they'll be unable to attack Miku for a while. You know how in Pokemon, how a Pokemon can faint and lose the battle, but be perfectly fine later after they've been healed at a Pokemon Center? The ghosts are kind of like that--think of the Camera Obscura as just 'fainting' them for a while.
The Camera Obscura may not be terribly useful in Demeleier, but hey.
(The Fatal Frame wiki has some very useful articles on Miku's sixth sense and the Camera Obscura, so I'll end this section with links to those pages:

Sample writing: "If you ever need me," Mafuyu would always tell her, "I'll be there."
She knew, of course, that he couldn't be around anymore. He had someone else he needed to be with, someone that needed him far more than Miku needed him--a shrine maiden deep underground, holding back the Hell Gate. Mafuyu was all that shrine maiden had.
It had taken two years, but now, Miku could finally accept his decision to stay with her. He would be happy there, by Kirie's side. And finally, Kirie would need not be alone anymore.
It was all right now, she thought. Nobody's situation had turned out perfectly, far from it--but it was something she had come to terms with.
She still missed her brother, but she didn't want to follow him into death, not any longer. She lived for a reason, didn't she? Besides, she'd grown very close to Rei during and after the Manor of Sleep incident, and it would be cruel to leave Rei behind.
The house, to her, still felt lonely without Yuu's presence, and the knowledge that Kei (and perhaps his niece too) had died in the manor often lingered sadly at the back of her mind. Kei, Yuu, Mafuyu... All friends, all had died. At least they could be with each-other in the afterlife...
Yuu and Kei, anyway. Mafuyu couldn't pass on, not as long as he was with Kirie. That bothered her a fair bit, too. The idea of her brother (and Kirie, for that matter) at the gate to hell for the rest of eternity--she hated thinking about it. But it was their decision. Mafuyu wanted to be with Kirie.
Though... Miku's thoughts sometimes wandered to what Rei had told her once, about what had happened after Reika was defeated. Rei had encountered Yuu at the Abyss of the Horizon, when all of the trapped spirits were moving on.
"As long as you go on living, a part of me will continue to live on."
Those were the words that Yuu had told her, Rei said.
Miku had, by now, plenty of reasons to want to live. Still, that statement simply reinforced how she had grown to feel.
She couldn't help smiling to herself when she would think of it.
Perhaps Mafuyu too could live on in Miku's memories.
Sample journal entry: [A soft voice, obviously female.] Rei...san?
Is this a dream? It doesn't feel like the Manor... Or any dream at all.
But... who knows...?
[The feed ends for a short while, as Miku tries to get her bearings. Upon speaking again, it's clearly deliberate rather than accidental. Her tone sounds far more assured.]
Rei-san, this is Miku. Please contact me as soon as you hear this, okay? I'll come find you then.
Stay safe.
[Short pause; she's thinking what to say next... Is it even safe to be using this thing? She doesn't get a bad vibe from it, so perhaps it's alright.]
If anyone else can hear me... My name is Hinasaki Miku. I... woke up here, and I'd like to get back home as soon as I can. It's urgent. I'll be around the general vicinity of... [pause to look up] It seems like this is a temple. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
[It's not a good idea to linger in one place, she knows. When dealing with say, violent ghosts, you have to keep moving. Staying still and leaving yourself open to attack is the worst possible idea. And though she's not sure where to go, she's used to traversing dangerous, unfamiliar territory. If she's learned anything from the mansion and manor, it's that familiarizing herself with the surrounding area is essential. So, she begins to explore.]
