History

Gwen is a Cardiff Police officer who discovers the Torchwood Institute into which she is recruited by Captain Jack Harkness. Gwen operates as a field agent on missions; adding her own unique perspective to cases.

As the series' progresses, Gwen becomes tougher, more confident and more in control, standing in as Torchwood's de facto leader on several occasions when Jack Harkness is missing. Despite her early ignorance in the ways of firearms later episodes show her become hardened and more militarized.

When Gray kills teammates Toshiko and Owen, Gwen is desolate, to the point where she questioned whether it was worth Torchwood continuing. She was still emotionally unsteady regarding the loss several months later. To help her cope, she took to placing a photograph of Owen and Tosh next to her workstation in the Hub.

At the beginning of the 456 incident, aliens began to communicate to the world by taking possession of it's children and one middle-aged man, Clem. Gwen investigates by visiting him, who announces to her she is pregnant, which she later confirms using the technology at the Hub. Jack then ran in and after seeing this placed his hand on her, which was still on the Hub's medical scanner. The picture then switched to reveal the bomb hidden inside Jack's body forcing Ianto and Gwen to abandon the Hub as it was destroyed.

Gwen is forced to defend herself from government assassins after the Hub is destroyed, taking Rhys on the run with her. When she finds out Jack has been taken, Gwen and Rhys sneak into a military base but were cornered outside Jack's cell. They were saved by Ianto who created a path using a forklift and the group, Jack included, escaped. Setting up a base of operations, they plan to stop the government, who want to negotiate with the aliens.

Having failed to stop the government or the aliens, Gwen goes to fulfill a promise to Jack - protect Ianto's niece and nephew. Running from the army proved fruitless and soon only Gwen and a single child were left uncaptured and running but she was saved when Jack destroyed the 456 and she happily embraced the children.

Six months after the 456 incident, she and Rhys meet Jack up on a hill, seeing him for the first time since the 456 incident. Gwen tried to convince Jack not to leave her and Torchwood, but she fails and he leaves, teleporting into space. Gwen was left sobbing in Rhys's arms. With Jack gone, the other members dead and Gwen heavily pregnant, the future of Torchwood Three was left in limbo. She later gave birth to a healthy baby, Anwen Williams.

PERSONALITY

• Her police training brings a more humane and rounded edge to the team's investigations; and she is often the character who manages to get scared and vulnerable third party individuals to open up. Despite her empathy for others, Gwen defies expectations by becoming tainted by the pressures of her work; the first series sees her become unfaithful to her boyfriend Rhys; and abuse alien technology for her own purpose. The second series sees Gwen become both monogamous and honest to Rhys; and he swiftly becomes a confidante with whom she can share the burdens of her job.

• She was always friendly and relatable with people, a trait that she picked up as a police officer, and the one that caused Jack Harkness to recruit her to Torchwood. Working for Torchwood, she was essential to Jack. While he thought with his head, a lot of her actions were lead by her heart. Jack even mentioned her as the 'heart' of the team. She's a loyal person. Not a complete goody goody, she did have an brief affair with Owen. If there was no child in the picture, who knows what might have happened with Gwen and Jack. While there was sexual tension with Jack, she remained true to Rhys in the end.

• LIKES: Coffee. Her family. Pizza.

• DISLIKES: Thinking about the past. Drunken Rhys.

• FEARS: Her Jack will never return.

• AMBITIONS: To try not to think about how lost she is without Jack, Rhys, or Anwen.
