I'm a little confused reading the above though. So he arranged to see his kids and a b&b but then didn't say the plans were changing and that he wouldn't be able to pop in?

He was really unwell (DVT remember...) and had an attack of "oh she won't want a sick bloke". It was a good job he had Julie's son was with him because he passed out at the wheel at one point! The aborted visit was not long after we got talking and he knows better now.
