Here is what I would absolutely love to see or read: A fantasy (or contemporary sci-fi) television show or book series with strong, realistic character focus, creative/surprising plot and action elements, female characters as good as male characters (and not just as interesting; they should be just as badass and plot-important as any of the male

I'm with you on that. People worship at the altar of the Holy Trilogy and, I admit, it was an amazing series -- but for what it *inspired*, not for what it *was*. Tolkien showed us what was possible in worldbuilding, and showed us the power of cultural and mythological research when creating a world. But as a series, LotR was an utter failure:
*) All the races except hobbits are 2D cardboard cutouts.
*) Morality is purely black and white.
*) There are no real plot twists. (With the *possible* exception of Gandalf's return from death, but even that wasn't much of a surprise.)
*) The pacing is horrific. Most of the series is staggeringly dull and I find myself wanting to flip pages just to get to where something is actually happening.
